The World Islands in United Arab Emirates is a collection of 300 man-made private islands strategically planned to shape like the world’s map. The World islands are composed mainly of sand dredged from Dubai’s shallow coastal waters, and are one of several artificial island developments in Dubai. Construction of the 300 islands began in 2003 but it experienced a brief halt due to the 2008 financial crisis. While 60 percent of the islands had been sold off to private contractors, there are only two islands that have been developed.
