Ifah SakinahCalling all animal lovers! The Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) recently put in place its “Adopt an Animal” programme. Under this sponsorship scheme, members from the general public can choose from 10 of the featured animals to adopt.

These are the animals you can adopt:
- Ben and Bella the African Penguins
- Coco the Aldabra Giant Tortoise
- Rambo the Eastern Grey Kangaroo
- Matahari the Malayan Sun Bear
- Ah Meng the Sumatran Orangutan
- Psota the Pygmy Hippopotamus
- Ronnie the Rex Rabbit
- Pedro the California Sea Lion
- Bunny the Two-Toed Sloth
- Bosco the Red Ruffed Lemur
The adoption is symbolic. This means that contributions will go towards WRS’s efforts undertaken to maintain the well-being of the multitude of animals under its care. They include: animal health and nutrition, field research, enrichment programmes, awareness building, rescue and rehabilitation, and capacity building.
Those who are keen can choose from the three tiers of adoption contribution ($200, $800 and $1500).
With each one-off donation, names of the adopters will be displayed on WRS website for a year. On top of that, they will receive an adoption e-certificate and animal fact sheet. Also, they can look forward to free admission tickets amongst other perks.
“Initiatives like Adopt an Animal provide people with accessible ways in which they can play active roles in conservation and be inspired to care for wildlife,” Ms Isabel Cheng, senior director of partnership development at WRS said.
Currently, the “Adopt an Animal” programme is only applicable to creatures residing in the Singapore Zoo. However, WRS has plans to roll out this scheme to include those in the Jurong Bird Park, River Safari and Night Safari as well.
Prior to the official launch, WRS members and subscribers were given the lowdown about the scheme in June. It has amassed nearly 200 individual sponsorships to date.
