Strap on your seatbelts, because here we go again on yet another K-drama emotional rollercoaster. Nevertheless, after we disembark, it pays to realise that there are indeed valuable lessons about love that we can take away for life.
1. About how good things are worth the wait from Crash Landing on You
If it is meant to be, it will be. It does not matter whether you boarded the wrong train. Sometimes, the wrong train might just take you to the destination that you have always yearned to travel to. Even if the road there was not necessarily how you had envisioned it to be in the first place.
Even if it feels as if you might be on the wrong track, I am a firm believer of one thing. And it is that life always works in unexpected ways. Life often steers us in unexpected directions. Although we may perceive these cues as counterintuitive at first, more often than not these things that throw us off guard are masked as blessings in disguise. And having complete knowledge of what the future holds takes with uncertainty, as well as anxiety, the fun out of it all.
About being grateful
We all felt emotional when Ri Jeong Hyuk (Hyun Bin) bared his emotions to Yoon Se-ri (Son Ye-jin) when they were bidding goodbye. In the emotionally-charged K-drama, he voiced out that she had come, or literally crash landed into his life like a gift. And he was ultimately grateful for that.
More often than not, we might be guilty of brushing off failed relationships as well as friendships in our lives as something that had gone awry. These friendships that we failed to save gradually were just but accumulated statistics of the times when they worked until they didn’t. But trying to keep count of these mistakes in the long run only serve to wear us down.
At times, we might be trapped in the indefinite downward spiral of wallowing in what we had lost. Nevertheless, instead of harbouring tunnel vision, opening our mind to the lessons learned is even more imperative. Whether it is understanding yourself on a deeper level, or simply that your outlook on life has matured for the better. More often than not, simple gratitude is enough. Therefore, even if the memories amounted to nothing, it has still been worthwhile.
2. About moving on from Goblin
Goblin imparted a powerful lesson, that is the harsh reality that there are simply some things in life that we cannot control. And we have to learn to be alright with letting go of the things that are not within our grasp. That is not to say that we do not fight for what we truly desire, or give up before a fight. But it is about not fighting a losing battle.
We have to learn the fine line between what we desire as well as reality. This means to come to an acceptance whereby we are at peace with ourselves. Only by seeking out this closure, can we then completely leave it behind in the past and move on. The closure comes from no one else, but ourselves.
3. About cherishing as well as self-love from What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim
One of this K-drama’s subtle underlying takeaways, yet of incredible significance, is not to take things for granted. At times, we might be so caught up in the noise that envelops us. When we are distracted, we fail to thoroughly appreciate what is in front of us. More often than not, it is said that humans only cherish what they have when they have lost it, or are on the verge of losing it. Let us be more mindful, as well as appreciative of every waking moment.
A second takeaway is centred on self-love as the core, in terms of living life on our own terms. This means that we live for ourselves and not anyone else. Life is so transient, so much so that leaving behind any regrets would be the greatest regret in itself. Hence, for the things in life that make us happy, we have to chase them well. At the end of the day, if we can safely say that we have tried to appreciate — as well as live — our lives to the fullest, it is not all for nought.

Every K-drama has sent us embarking on emotional rollercoasters, that we would gladly volunteer for time and again. Each time we relive our experiences, we take away with us life lessons about love. In the end, we become better versions of ourselves.
