There’s beauty in lifelessness and you can just tell when you visit Deadvlei in Namibia. It is without a doubt the most beautiful “dead” place on earth!

Situated inside the Namib-Naukluft Park in Namibia, Deadvlei, also written as DeadVlei or Dead Vlei, is a white clay pan that has been surrounded by the highest sand dunes in the world. The name Deadvlei is often mistakenly translated as “dead valley” when it actually means “dead marsh”. The trees here died because there’s not enough water to survive. It is estimated that they are around 900 years old and that they have not decomposed yet due to the dry climate.

Some photos of Deadvlei look like surreal paintings because of the high contrast of colours. The pitch-black trees stand out against the white pans, and the red orange dunes complement with the deep blue sky. The irony of lifelessness and beauty makes Deadvlei an appealing destination for photographers and landscape enthusiasts.
