What is Skyline Luge?
Invented in New Zealand in 1985, the Skyline Luge is a gravity-based luge cart that takes riders on an exhilarating downhill journey featuring thrilling tunnels and corners. Operated by the force of gravity, riders control the speed by adjusting their handlebars back and forth.
The world’s first Skyline Luge is situated in Rotorua, New Zealand. Since then, over 60 million luge rides have been enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. Now, enthusiasts can embark on an exhilarating Skyline Luge ride in countries such as Canada, South Korea, Singapore, and, soon to come, Malaysia!
My experience trying Skyline Luge KL
Before hopping on a Skyline Luge ride, do remember to wear comfortable clothing and covered shoes for safety purposes. There are lockers available before the ticket counter where you can temporarily store your belongings.
Upon ticket purchase, remember to wear a helmet of your size before boarding the Skyride up the hill. Helmets are available in sizes XS, S, M, L, and XL, catering to individuals of all sizes and ages.
The Skyride, a four-seater chairlift, transports you to the starting line of the Skyline Luge. Along the ride, enjoy the serene view of the surrounding mountains and skyline, albeit just a short while.
If it’s your first time, don’t worry, as there will be luge instructors guiding you on how to operate the luge. It’s pretty straightforward — just pull back on the handlebars to slow down or brake, and release the handlebars slightly to accelerate. Gravity will help you do most of the work.
There are four different luge tracks to choose from, each offering thrilling corners and turns. Some tracks even feature tunnels adorned with colourful lights. It’s a 1.6km-long downhill adventure, and you can go as fast as you want by controlling the handlebars. There will also be cameras along the way capturing your luge memories.
How much is the price per ride?
The price of two, three, four, and five Skyline Luge rides, inclusive of Skyride, are RM50 (~S$14.33), RM60 (~S$17.19), RM70 (~S$20.06), and RM80 (~S$22.93) respectively. There’s also a kid-friendly option — the Child Doubling ticket, allowing children below six years old and between 85 to 110cm to share a cart with an accompanying adult, priced at only RM25 (~S$7.16). If you prefer a less adventurous experience, there’s also the to and fro Skyride ticket available for RM20 (~S$5.73).
However, we recommend purchasing the tickets online, as they are slightly cheaper. For riders who want to bring home their luge memories, printed and digital photos and videos are available for purchase, starting at RM18 (~S$5.16).
