Travel to the most magical Christmas destinations this holiday season:

1. Japan

First, Japan. No surprise; the beautiful country is always on top of our list of holiday destinations, especially during the Christmas season. But if it’s your first time, picture this: a cosy ryokan, hot sake, and mouthwatering sashimi — although locals will typically grab KFC takeout for their holiday feast. Outside, the world is dusted with snow and brilliant illuminations transform Japanese cities into a storybook setting.

You won’t go wrong with any place in Japan. For instance, the capital Tokyo sparkles extra brightly this time of year with light-up displays like the Tokyo Midtown Illumination, Marunouchi Illumination, and the bedazzled Yomiuri Land Jewellumination.

If you’re looking for a winter wonderland, there are very few destinations around the world that live up to the magic of Sapporo. The frosty city in Hokkaido has all the elements of a Hallmark Christmas movie: shimmering lights, fluffy snow, and a festive vibe that will melt the heart of even the staunchest Grinch. Bask in seasonal cheer at Odori Park, where there are snow sculptures and glittering trees, plus hot wine and Christmas treats at the park’s German Christmas Market. Visiting Sapporo a little later during the winter season? Sapporo Snow Festival is a popular event that takes place every February at Odori Park, Susukino, and Tsudome.

Visiting to enjoy the brilliant winter illuminations? Stay close to lights when you book a room at Wyndham Garden Sapporo Odori, a modern hotel in Central Sapporo that sits right across Sapporo TV Tower — a tourist attraction usually covered in brightly coloured lights during Christmas.

You’re on vacation, but if you must keep up at work, there’s free WiFi and a co-working space in Wyndham Garden Sapporo Odori for digital nomads. Moreover, beautifully appointed .guest rooms promise you can rest well after busy days out in the snow. Day trips to ski slopes and other Hokkaido hotspots are also a big draw among business and leisure hotel guests.

2. South Korea

K-dramas and kimchi aside, South Korea has plenty to offer as one of Asia Pacific’s top Christmas holiday destinations. Make sure your camera is ready when you visit Seoul, with the city wrapped in a kaleidoscope of vibrant colours and glittering lights. From the light festival and holiday shows at Lotte World to the blinding lights of Myeongdong, you’ll never run out of things to see and do in Seoul.

That said, while Seoul is a must-see, it’s not the only worthwhile place to explore in South Korea. Make your way to Garden of Morning Calm in nearby Gapyeong for the enchanting Light Festival that covers the entire garden in shining lights.

Meanwhile, just south of the capital city sits Suwon, a serene destination that offers a pleasant change of pace from bustling Seoul. Home to the World Heritage-listed Suwon Fortress and near the famous Korean Folk Village, it’s perfect for travellers who enjoy a walk back in time. Best of all, it’s only a half-hour’s drive from Seoul, so you’ll get the best of both worlds: Enjoy big city food, shops, and illuminations, then retreat to picturesque Suwon to dive into the old-world lifestyle.

Seaside Busan also guarantees a festive experience. The annual Busan Christmas Tree Lighting Festival makes a glittering backdrop for your holiday photos, from the giant Christmas tree soaring over the Gwangbok-ro area to the colourful LED lights and jolly musical performances. In between Christmas carols, the city’s beaches and beautiful temples are excellent stops for tourists in Busan during the yuletide season. Take a day trip to Eden Valley Ski Resort for a thrilling day out on the slopes, too!

Where to stay: Wyndham Grand Busan Ljin

Travellers are in luck: Beachside Busan comes with plenty of world-class accommodations. For sightseers, our pick is Wyndham Grand Busan Ljin, a luxury oasis in the city with sweeping views of Songdo Beach. Here, world-class amenities pamper guests at every turn: From the heated indoor pool and sauna to the gourmet meals and local favourites at the four on-site restaurants, you get the best of everything when you book at Wyndham Grand Busan Ljin.

Meanwhile, we also love Ramada Plaza by Wyndham Suwon for its comfortable rooms, contemporary facilities, and convenient location. A gym, a sauna, and an on-site restaurant mean you won’t have to worry about the essentials. More importantly, it’s in the heart of downtown Suwon with easy access to nearby Everland Theme Park and Seoul’s city centre.

3. China

If China isn’t on your bucket list, then you’re missing out. Although Christmas isn’t a religious celebration in this part of the world, the country treats locals and travellers to a sensory feast: dazzling light displays, shopping sprees, and tasty holiday spreads of steaming dumplings and sizzling noodles. Don’t be surprised to receive apples from local pals — it’s a traditional Chinese gift as a symbol of peace and love.

Shanghai is a good bet for your holiday travels with the city sprinkling holiday cheer on everything. From skyscrapers draped in festive lights to Christmas decor adding extra pep along the Huangpu River, it’s hard not to get caught up in the yuletide spirit! There are plenty of holiday activities, including the Winter Frostival at Shanghai Disney Resort for kids and kids-at-heart. Fancy a taste of traditional European celebrations? Drop by the German Christmas Market, where you can snack on authentic German sausages and warm up with classic drinks like eggnog.

The most wonderful time of the year deserves the most wonderful holiday stay, don’t you think? Thus, splurge on a room at Wyndham Shanghai Hongqiao, an upscale hotel known for its luxurious European architecture that’s a scene-stealer in modern Shanghai. Expect the best of everything: stylish guestrooms (some with butler service), four elegant on-site restaurants, a sprawling Sky Garden with a seasonal pool, and a children’s play area.

Meanwhile, sleek La Quinta by Wyndham Shanxi Xiaohe Xincheng is a great choice for travellers heading out to Taiyuan in Shanxi Province. Beyond the chic accommodations, it offers easy access to the city’s historic and cultural attractions.

4. Vietnam

Vietnam oozes charm all year round, but like many other Christmas holiday destinations, it’s especially lovely during the yuletide season. Although Christmas is not an official Vietnamese holiday, it’s brimming with festive trimmings, from Christmas trees and holiday gifts to nativity scenes outside churches. Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi are lively, a mix of local revellers and tourist crowds keeping the atmosphere festive around the holidays.

If, like us, you’re partial to seaside attractions, look no further than Phu Quoc Island, a serene retreat and the perfect break from work-related or holiday-induced stress. Truly, the 150-kilometre coastline will deliver the most blissful of holidays with swaying palm trees kissing the shore, waves lapping gently on pristine beaches, and coral reefs teeming with life. It’s paradise, plain and simple. Additionally, Phu Quoc is home to VinWonders Phu Quoc, the largest theme park in Vietnam. An excellent present for the youngsters in your life, don’t you think?

On the other hand, the fairytale town of Hoi An also beckons as one of Vietnam’s magical Christmas holiday destinations. The old town is a gem glowing under the soft lights of handmade lanterns, while natural spots like the Thu Bon River, mangrove forests, and rice fields offer a slow-paced break from bustling cities.

Where to stay: Wyndham Grand Phu Quoc

Avoid jostling with other beach bums on crowded shores; Wyndham Grand Phu Quoc is a private paradise with an exclusive stretch of white sand beach for VIPs. It’s hard to imagine a more idyllic place to crash in Vietnam than this one. We recommend staying for more than just a few days to make the most of the world-class resort amenities, including state-of-the-art tennis, basketball, and volleyball courts. Wyndham Grand Phu Quoc also features a luxurious spa, an outdoor pool, and four gourmet restaurants that will satisfy the cravings of any foodie.

Eager to explore more of Vietnam? Make your way to quaint Hoi An and book a stay at Wyndham Hoi An Royal Beachfront Resort for a breezy stay on the shores of An Bang Beach.

5. Philippines

No country is as in love with the holidays as much as the Philippines. We’re serious: As early as September, Christmas carols will be on loop in shopping malls and public transportation in Metro Manila. And when the holiday parties begin? Expect to be invited to multiple get-togethers and be prepared for overflowing food, booze, chaotic games, and karaoke.

But you’ll have to venture out of the metro for the most dazzling event of the long holiday season, though: Giant Lantern Festival in San Fernando, Pampanga. A dazzling event that transforms the city into a spectacle of light and artistry, the century-old festival features parols or lanterns as big as nine metres in diameter. Each one is a testament to local craftsmanship and skill — and you won’t find a more jaw-dropping display of lights in the Philippines. Plus, you’ll get to savour the famously tasty Kapampangan cuisine!

Travellers who need a break from the hot tropical weather can head upland to the pine-filled Baguio. Boasting cooler climes than most parts of the Philippines, the mountain city is probably one of the handful of holiday destinations in the country where you can actually wear your ugly Christmas sweater! Not to mention, plenty of Baguio’s tourist spots are decked out in festive decor come December. Tip: Baguio Country Club’s Christmas Village is a particular highlight.

Where to stay: Microtel by Wyndham Pampanga

In the vibrant heart of San Fernando sits Microtel by Wyndham Pampanga, easily accessible by international travellers a stone’s throw away from the Clark International Airport. That means you won’t have to worry about diving into Manila traffic if you’re visiting Pampanga! The modern hotel promises the ideal home away from home, too; it has high-speed WiFi for remote workers, an outdoor pool to beat the heat, and pristine rooms with plenty of light and space. What more do you need?

Up in the mountains, there’s Microtel by Wyndham Baguio. The 92-room hotel guarantees one of the most comfortable stays in the City of Pines, with perks like chiropractor-approved beds and the in-house Amare La Cucina restaurant for yummy Italian favourites.

6. Thailand

If you’re looking for the kind of Christmas dazzle that only beautiful beaches can provide, then your next stop is Thailand. Shimmering temples, world-class shopping, and night-long parties await in Bangkok, but most travellers who come in December are in the country to lounge on white sand beaches. The backpacker-favourite is hailed across the world for its sublime shores, so you can’t go wrong chasing sunshine and saltwater in this corner of the world.

There’s no running out of beaches to explore in Thailand, but if it’s your first time exploring the tropical country, then we recommend making a beeline for sun-kissed Phuket. As Thailand’s largest island, it definitely has more than its fair share of fine white coast. Not to mention, the nightlife is legendary! Turquoise waters and nonstop parties? Count us in.

Where to stay: Wyndham Grand Nai Harn Beach Resort Phuket

Settling in Phuket for your holiday escape? Among the many hotels and resorts on the island, Wyndham Grand Nai Harn Beach Resort Phuket is undoubtedly a standout. A short stroll from Nai Harn Beach, the luxury hotel promises the dreamy escape you’re looking for in Thailand. Gracefully appointed guest rooms overlook the Andaman Coast, while travellers can sample authentic Thai and Western cuisine in-house. Whether you’re travelling with family, friends, a significant other, or just by yourself, Wyndham Grand Nai Harn Beach Phuket is an idyllic gateway into Phuket.

Fully booked? Wyndham La Vita Phuket is also a fantastic alternative with modern rooms, a tranquil spa, and the kid-favourite Splash Station water playground. Rawai Beach is steps away from the resort, so sun-seekers can lounge on the beach from sunup to sundown.

7. Indonesia

christmas holiday destinations

Speaking of tropical vacations, we can’t skip Indonesia, can we? Especially the archipelago’s most popular holiday destination, Bali. The Island of the Gods is just one of the places we could never resist, Christmas or not!

From the ancient temples of Ubud and surfer-friendly Uluwatu to the clifftop views of Nusa Penida and the beautiful beach clubs of Seminyak, Bali guarantees a glorious island getaway in Southeast Asia. Come Christmastime, festive touches dot the tropical idyll: palm trees adorned with twinkling lights; colourful holiday markets selling handicrafts for gifts; and generous Christmas feasts at fancy hotels and resorts.

In the south-central part of Java, scenic Yogyakarta offers a symphony of history, culture, and natural beauty. Most travellers make a beeline for the famed Borobudur Temple or Prambanan Temple, while others will prioritise visiting natural gems like Timang Beach or Merapi Volcano. Either way, you’re in for a treat in Yogyakarta.

Where to stay: Ramada Encore by Wyndham Seminyak Bali

Nestled close to dining establishments, nightlife spots, and charming shops, Ramada Encore by Wyndham Seminyak Bali lets travellers enjoy their Bali vacation to the fullest. Here, you’re never too far from sandy shores, with Petitenget Beach, 66 Beach, Kuta Beach, and Seminyak Beach all just minutes away. Plus, even when you’re not in the mood to go to the beach, you can dive into the outdoor pool for a refreshing swim.

Meanwhile, find your base in Ramada by Wyndham Yogyakarta if you’re sticking to Java Island. The contemporary hotel near Borobudur Temple is a great pick, giving tourists top-notch amenities like a full-service spa, a swimming pool, and even jogging and BMX tracks.

8. Taiwan

Get in the holiday spirit in one of the most underrated Christmas holiday destinations: Taiwan. It’s a must-add to any Asia Pacific bucket list — if it’s on yours, start at the capital city. Taipei provides festive fun at every turn, from glimmering light shows and joyous parades to bustling markets and charming local traditions.

Holiday enthusiasts can’t miss stopping by Christmasland at Banqiao District where the Tunnel of Lights will give anyone a healthy dose of Christmas cheer. For a heartwarming glimpse into local Christmas traditions, head to Ji-Qing Christmas Alley. This charming neighbourhood comes alive with dazzling decorations, each house vying for the title of “most festive.” And don’t leave Taipei before New Year’s Eve; the breathtaking display of pyrotechnics at the iconic Taipei 101 skyscraper is definitely a dazzling extravaganza worth sticking around for.

Looking for something more serene for your year-end vacation? Sun Moon Lake may be more your speed. The alpine lake in the heart of Taiwan comes as a breath of fresh air, surrounded by beautiful temples, magnificent mountains, and lush forests best seen on boat and bike rides. Although it’s a popular day trip destination, we recommend staying a night or two to make the most of your lakeside break.

Not only is every meal fit for a Christmas Eve feast — whether you’re eating street food or fine dining tasting menus — but the myriad of historical, cultural, and natural attractions mean there’s something for every kind of traveller.

Mesmerising Kuala Lumpur is a must-see for everyone, though. Rugged adventures, stunning beaches, thriving arts and gastronomy, and a laid-back culture that inspires us to leave our worries behind — that’s Australia. Sounds heavenly, right? There’s no wonder travellers troop Down Under all year round, from stylish Sydney to vibrant multicultural Melbourne and everything in between.

Our tip: Don’t overlook Adelaide when you’re exploring sprawling Australia, especially during the Christmas season when the city is lit up and brimming with seasonal cheer. For one, it’s practically a tradition to snap a picture next to the Giant Christmas Tree in Victoria Square. There’s also the weekend event of Hahndorf Christkindlemarkt that brings the vibe of European-style Christmas markets to the Asia Pacific city. Carolling is a long-time tradition in Adelaide, too; Carols by Candlelight is an annual show that brings together South Australians in a night of singalongs and Christmas carols.
