While cruising at around 35,000 feet, approximately 50 minutes into the flight, the Boeing 737 MAX 8 encountered an issue with its pressurisation system. This system regulates air pressure within the aircraft cabin, ensuring a comfortable and safe environment for passengers.

A malfunction can lead to a rapid decompression, which is exactly what happened on this Korean Air flight. Imagine oxygen masks dropping from the ceiling – that’s what passengers experienced as the plane began a rapid descent.

Thankfully, the pilots reacted swiftly and diverted the flight back to Incheon International Airport in South Korea. Online flight tracking data suggests the plane descended from its cruising altitude of 35,000 feet to a much lower 9,000 feet within a short 10-minute timeframe.

Passenger accounts and injuries

A TikTok video, likely filmed onboard the flight, has surfaced. The video shows oxygen masks deployed and passengers understandably startled. The video reportedly describes the descent as happening “within minutes” and feeling like a “roller coaster.” Passengers also mentioned experiencing ear pain due to the rapid cabin pressure change.

Thankfully, despite the scary situation, no serious injuries were reported. In fact, 15 passengers experienced ear pain and hyperventilation during the incident. Hospital staff evaluated 13 of these passengers further.

Korean Air prioritised passenger safety and well-being. The airline arranged overnight accommodations for all passengers and quickly rebooked them on another flight. The replacement flight took off smoothly on Sunday morning, 23 June 2024, and arrived safely at Taichung International Airport later that afternoon.
