Thailand to Launch Electronic Travel Authorisation for Tourists in End 2024

The application process is free of charge.

Singaporeans and other visa-exempt visitors to Thailand may soon be required to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before their trip. A pilot phase for the system is expected to start in Dec 2024, with a full implementation by Jun 2025.

The ETA system will apply to most visa-exempt countries entering Thailand by land, air, or sea. However, holders of diplomatic passports, official passports, UN Laissez-Passer, and Border Pass users will be exempt.

Visitors can apply for the Electronic Travel Authorisation online

Visa-exempt visitors will need to apply for an ETA online and the application process is expected to be free of charge. The ETA will grant a single entry for up to 60 days per visit, with the possibility of extending it to another 30 days at the discretion of the immigration officer.

Integration with e-Visa system

The ETA system will be introduced simultaneously with the e-Visa system. Both systems are expected to be integrated into a single online application platform by Jun 2025. Moreover, the ETA will allow visitors to obtain a QR code to access the automated gates at immigration checkpoints.

Expansion of visa exemption and national security

According to an official spokesperson, introducing the ETA system “will be an important tool for screening and tracking the movement of foreigners entering Thailand.” This move comes after the Thai government expanded the visa exemption to several countries such as the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, and Japan in Jul 2024.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has introduced the ETA system as part of a step-up plan to safeguard Thailand’s security and attract more visitors to the country.
