Getting to Big Sister’s Island
To reach Big Sister’s Island, head to Marina South Pier and choose between two main ferry operators: Marina South Ferries and Singapore Island Cruise. Here’s a quick breakdown of each option to help you plan how to get to Big Sister’s Island:
Marina South Ferries offers a more direct route to Big Sister’s Island. From Marina South Pier, you’ll sail straight to the island. On your way back, the ferry stops at Kusu Island, giving you the choice to either return immediately to Marina South Pier or make a stop at St John’s Island to explore a bit more before heading back.
TripZilla Tip: You can pre-book your tickets online and collect them 30 minutes before departure from the yellow counter at Marina South Pier. Alternatively, you can purchase tickets directly on-site.
Singapore Island Cruise follows a slightly different route, which is perfect for those who want to experience island hopping. You’ll first take a ferry to St John’s Island, which acts as an “interchange,” of sorts before hopping on another ferry to reach Big Sister’s Island. For your return trip, you’ll make stops at both St John’s Island and Kusu Island before heading back to Marina South Pier.
TripZilla Tip: You can pre-book your tickets online and collect them 20 minutes before departure from the counter at #01-04 at Marina South Pier. Note that each online booking comes with a S$1 booking fee. Alternatively, you can purchase tickets directly on-site.
Ferry Ride to Big Sister’s Island
The ride started smoothly, with our ferry gliding along the waters as we passed by the Singapore mainland. We felt a rush of excitement as we spotted familiar buildings from this unique perspective — the towering skyline of the Central Business District, the exclusive enclave of Sentosa Cove and even my own home!
But things quickly took a turn when a sudden downpour hit, causing the waves to get rough. Even though we had reached Big Sister’s Island, the ferry crew decided it was too dangerous to let us disembark right away. We ended up waiting on the ferry for more than half an hour and while the SpongeBob playing on the screen was a good initial distraction, seasickness started to kick. Some unfortunately overturned their breakfast so you may want to have plastic bags on hand if you’re prone to seasickness.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the crew helped us carefully disembark, gripping us tightly as we stepped out one by one. At last, we were free to explore Big Sister’s Island!
Exploring Big Sister’s Island
Floating boardwalk
First things first, don’t let the name “Big Sister’s Island” fool you — it’s not that big. But what it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm and scenic beauty. As soon as we set foot on the island, the new floating boardwalk right at the jetty caught our attention.
You can spot a vibrant array of corals, fish and naturally coloured rock formations as you bob along the stretch. Keep an eye out for staghorn corals that resemble deer antlers and the striking green tuskfish!
Fun Fact: This floating boardwalk is Singapore’s very first, adding a touch of novelty to your adventure!
Ocean Network Express Coastal Forest Trail
The adventure continues along the 230m Ocean Network Express Coastal Forest Trail, which starts from an unassuming flight of stairs right at the end of the floating boardwalk. As you walk this trail, you’ll be surrounded by lush greenery, with critically endangered coastal species like the Putat Laut and Penaga Laut adding to the rich biodiversity. Look out for the elegant mangrove fan palm and you might even spot the elusive paradise tree snake gliding gracefully through the branches.
Climbing to the two-storey hilltop view deck at the peak of the island rewards you with breathtaking vistas of the surrounding azure sea and the neighbouring Small Sister’s Island. This panoramic lookout is the best view accessible to the public for now, as Small Sister’s Island, along with its turtle hatchery, remains closed to visitors.
Birdwatchers will find this spot a true gem, with a telescope conveniently placed for a closer look at the local avian wildlife. From the critically endangered great-billed heron to the white-bellied sea eagle and spotted wood owl, there’s plenty to spot for those with keen eyes and a love for birdwatching.
Lagoons
The island’s restructured tidal pool is a fantastic highlight for those interested in marine life. Visitors can embark on intertidal walks, snorkel, or take a swim to get up close to fascinating underwater creatures. With a low seawall that retains seawater even at low tide, you won’t have to worry about missing out on the experience.
Shelters
For a well-deserved rest, several shelters are scattered across the island, each offering stunning panoramic views of the sparkling sea and surrounding islets. These shaded spots are perfect for taking a break, having a picnic, or simply basking in the serene atmosphere. With the gentle sea breeze and the soothing sound of waves as your backdrop, it’s an idyllic setting to take in the natural beauty of the island and rejuvenate your senses.
TripZilla Tip: Be sure to pack plenty of snacks, as there are no stores or food options available on the island!
