Shaking Things Up: Earthquake Experience

Japan is famous for its earthquakes, and at this centre, you can experience just what it feels like when the ground starts shaking. Don’t worry – No one’s going to let you fall through the cracks – This is an incredibly safe, controlled environment that mimics the rumbling, bumpy chaos of a real quake. Whether you’re an earthquake newbie or a seasoned shaker, this is an unforgettable experience that’ll make you feel prepared for when the next one strikes. Think of it as a “ride” but with a much more important twist – You’ll leave with practical skills for what to do when the ground gets grumbly.

Get Your Fire-Fighting On

Ever wondered if you could put out a fire before it burns out of control? Now’s your chance! The Firefighting Experience Corner lets you play hero, teaching you how to use a fire extinguisher and an indoor hydrant to battle a blazing fire (well, a simulated one, but still!). This isn’t just a passive “watch and learn” kind of thing. Here, you’re stepping up to the plate to tackle those flames head-on. Kids from 3rd grade and up (or adults, of course) can get their fire-fighting groove on.

TripZilla Tip: Don’t wear your best clothes unless you want to leave with a “firefighter chic” look!

Survive the Smoke

Next, you’ll head into the Smoke Experience Corner, where things are bound to get a little smokey. You’ll learn about the characteristics of smoke and how it’s one of the biggest hazards during a fire. Don’t panic, though! You’ll also get the skills to escape it. Here’s where you’ll practice evacuating through a “neutral zone” – basically a boundary between the thick smoke and breathable air. It’s an important, life-saving tactic that you’ll want to know before you find yourself in a smoky situation.

When It Rains, It Pours (and Floods)

If you’ve ever experienced a torrential downpour, you know how crazy it can get. But do you know how to react if your city starts flooding? The Flooding Experience Corner uses virtual reality to simulate walking through flooded streets during a storm. It’s harder than it sounds, and it’s a wake-up call for anyone who thinks they can just “dodge the puddles.” The real lesson here? Evacuate early before you get swept away. Plus, you’ll get the chance to feel what it’s like to open a car door that’s under water pressure. Yikes, right?

The VR Disaster Experience: Simulating the Unimaginable

Looking for a more futuristic way to experience natural disasters? Say hello to the VR Disaster Experience Corner, where virtual reality lets you step into earthquakes, fires, and even wind storms. This immersive, cutting-edge tech brings it all to life. Also, it gives you the chance to react in real-time to disasters that seem out of the realm of possibility. It’s the perfect way to experience the unthinkable while learning valuable survival strategies.

Rescue Operations: Step Up and Save Lives

Ever wonder how first responders rescue people in the aftermath of a disaster? Now you don’t have to wonder. The Rescue Corner allows you to experience rescue operations and prepares you to help those in need before and after a catastrophe strikes. Think of it as “disaster prep with a heart.” Whether you’re using tools to clear rubble or learning how to perform first aid, this section gets you hands-on with life-saving skills.

Bringing the Whole Family (or Group) Along

And the best part? All the experiences are completely free! So, gather up your family, friends, or even come solo to feel like a total hero. The Disaster Prevention Centre is designed for anyone, from the youngest toddler (well, over 3 years old) to older adults, and it’s the ultimate way to bond with loved ones while learning crucial life-saving skills.

Reservation? You Betcha!

While the entrance is free, there’s one thing to keep in mind. You’ll need to book your spot in advance! With various courses like the Natural Disaster Course and Self-help and Mutual Aid Course, you’ll get to experience everything from earthquakes to fire-fighting. But here’s the catch: These tours fill up quickly, so it’s best to reserve early. Luckily, it’s all super easy online, and if you’re feeling spontaneous, you can even reserve by phone up to 5 days in advance. Just make sure you show up 15 minutes before your tour starts – This isn’t a place to be fashionably late!

Where’s This Amazing Place, You Ask?

You can find the Honjo Disaster Prevention Centre in the lively Sumida area of Tokyo, just a short 10-minute walk from Kinshicho Station. (The Toei Asakusa Line Oshiage Station is also nearby, so there’s no excuse for getting lost!)

TripZilla Tip: It’s open from 9am to 5pm, but be mindful that it’s closed on Wednesdays and the third Thursday of every month (unless it’s a national holiday). Also, make sure you’re ready to dive into these awesome activities before 4.30pm, as the entrance is cut off just before closing time.

So, next time you’re in Tokyo and looking for a way to stay safe while having a blast, don’t just stop at the usual sights. Head to the Honjo Disaster Prevention Centre, where you can get a crash course (pun intended) on surviving some of nature’s most unpredictable events. It’s educational, it’s fun, and it might just save your life someday. Now, who says disaster preparedness can’t be thrilling?
