We all know Jeju to be a paradise for nature lovers, boasting interesting rock formations, pristine beaches, and majestic waterfalls. Another addition to this list of Jeju Island attractions is Cheonjeyeon Waterfalls, also known as the Pond of God.

Cheonjeyeon consists of three sections: The first waterfall separates to produce the second and third, whereby the water eventually flows into the sea. Furthermore, around the subtropical falls, an abundance of flora and fauna exist! For instance, you can find the rare and unique Solipnan reeds and Skeleton fork ferns, making Cheonjeyeon Waterfalls a true botanist’s paradise.

If you venture to the cave at Cheonjeyeon Waterfalls, you might come across the bright red Seonim Bridge over the cascade! Also known as Chilseonyeogyo (Seven Nymphs Bridge), this moniker is attributed to the seven nymphs carved on both sides of the bridge. The nymphs symbolise the seven beautiful and legendary nymphs that would descend from heaven at night.

In fact, the Chilseonyeo Festival in May celebrates the coming of the nymphs. Not to mention, this arch bridge certainly makes the perfect backdrop for some gorgeous photo opportunities!

Here’s one more UNESCO World Heritage Site that calls Jeju Island its home! Also known as Sunrise Peak to non-Korean speakers, Seongsan Ilchubong is famed for its picturesque sunrise views one can marvel at. There’s no wonder why it’s become one of the most iconic Jeju Island attractions.

At first glance, this magnificent geological feature looks like a giant fortress, with an abundance of rocks at the top. But don’t be fooled, this mountain is actually an extinct volcano with a huge crater at its peak, not unlike Mount Hallasan.

More than 5,000 years ago, the crater rose from the sea in a series of volcanic eruptions. Today, you’ll find a ridge connecting all areas of Seongsan Ilchubong, making it perfect for walking and horse-riding to the nearby Seongsan Village. In the springtime, the mountain’s peak is covered in a field of yellow rapeseed flowers, making your climb up the mountain well worth the effort.

Pro tip: Come at the end of the day for a sunset that will take your breath away.

5. Jeongbang Waterfall

The only waterfall in Asia to plunge directly into the ocean, Jeongbang Waterfall is probably the most famous waterfall to visit on Jeju Island. Clear blue waters, verdant foliage, and craggy cliff walls create one of the prettiest vistas in all of Jeju. The wall of the 23-metre cascade is inscribed with the words “Seobulgwacha,” which refers to Seobul, a servant of the Chinese Emperor Jin. Legend says Seobul passed by this very spot and left his name on the cliff wall on his way to Mount Hallasan.

For more unique things to do in Jeju, walk down to the rocky coast where you’ll see a few ahjummas (middle-aged women) selling fresh catch from the sea. Why not spare some time and money to enjoy some raw sea urchin sashimi from these ahjummas before hiking back up the waterfall?

After all, stones are an integral part of the island’s culture and heritage — and this cultural and ecological park is a great way to learn exactly why Jeju’s stone culture is so significant.

Wander through the park to see the many dol haerubangs, which are large stone sculptures often carved for protection. A smattering of original sculptures are found in other tourist spots like Hyeopjae Beach and Cheonjiyeon Falls, but the impressive collection in Jeju Stone Park is the best way to appreciate these mysterious statues.

Inside the park, you’ll also find the Jeju Stone Museum. This educational stop explains the geological roots of South Korea and the volcanic events that contributed to the formation of Jeju Island. Highlights also include the large-scale Jeju village replica on the grounds.
