Schwerin Castle is a beautiful palace floating atop the Schwerin Lake. Known as the ‘gem’ of Northeast Germany, the Neo-Renaissance ducal castle is considered to be one of the loveliest in the entire country. The castle was created long ago in 1160 by Henry the Lion (Henry III), deserted in 1765 and renovated in 1843, whereupon it started to take the form we see today.
The castle also houses the State Art Museum, displaying a wide range of art from the ancient to the 20th century. It holds one of the largest collection of paintings by Oudry and sculptures by Houdon.
There are many rumours surrounding the Schwerin Castle. Many say that the majestic castle is haunted by its very own friendly ghost! Petermännchen is a spirit from the 17th century who guards the castle from intruders. He is thought to carry many sets of keys about his “person” and he wanders through the hallways locking and unlocking doors.
Opening hours: 10am to 6pm (10am to 5pm from Oct 15th to April 14th). It is closed on Mondays.
