9-Day Thailand Itinerary: Ayutthaya, Bangkok & Hua Hin

This itinerary will cover the Ayutthaya, Bangkok and Hua Hin, Thailand over 9 days, and is the fourth and final part of my Thailand – Laos backpacking trip.

At a glance

Day 1 – Nong Khai to Ayutthaya. Arrival in Nong Khai from Vientiane, Laos. Sightseeing around Nong Khai, visiting Nong Thin park and the riverside area, before taking the overnight train to Ayutthaya, later in the evening
Day 2 – Ayutthaya. Check-in to Somjai Place upon arriving in Ayutthaya in the morning. Continue the day with a cycling tour around Ayutthaya, visiting important sites such as Wat Maha That, Wat Phra Ram, Wat Lokayasutharam and Wat Chaiwatthanaram. Overnight in Ayutthaya.
Day 3 – Ayutthaya to Bangkok. Check-out from the guesthouse and took a train from Ayutthaya to Bangkok. Chatuchak weekend market was first on my list upon arriving in Bangkok. From there, I went onwards to JJ Green market later in the evening. Check-in to Good Day Hostel in Pratunam. Overnight in Bangkok.
Day 4 – Bangkok. Sightseeing around Pratunam, Asok and Phetchaburi, visiting the various malls in those areas such as Platinum Mall, Central World and Terminal 21. Spent the remainder of my evening at ArtBox Bangkok. Overnight in Bangkok.
Day 5 – Bangkok to Samut Songkhram & back. Day trip to Samut Songkhram, with visits to Maeklong railway market and Amphawa floating market. Overnight in Bangkok.
Day 6 – Bangkok to Hua Hin. Check-out from the hostel and took a train from Bangkok to Hua Hin. Check-in to Say Cheese Guesthouse, upon arrival in Hua Hin. Spent my day in Hua Hin beach and in the night market later in the evening. Overnight in Hua Hin.
Day 7 – Hua Hin. Day trip to Cha-Am, visiting Plearnwan Eco Village on the way. Spent my afternoon in Cha-Am beach. Visited Swiss Sheep Farm and Santorini Park before returning to Hua Hin. Overnight in Hua Hin.
Day 8 – Hua Hin to Bangkok. Did a short visit to Hin Lek Fai viewpoint for good views of Hua Hin. Afterwards, I checked out from the guesthouse and took a bus from Hua Hin back to Bangkok. Check-in to Green House Hostel in Khaosan road upon arrival in Bangkok. Later, I took a boat to Asiatique to spend my evening there. Took a bus back to Khaosan, with a stop in Yaowarat road for dinner. Overnight in Bangkok.
Day 9 – Bangkok. Check-out from hostel and walked from Khaosan to Panfa Leelard, with quick stops at Democracy Monument, Pom Mahakan and Wat Saket. Spent some time in MBK Center, before heading off to the airport for my flight back home

DAY 1

Arrival in Thailand from Laos

• 12.30 pm – Arrival at Nong Khai immigration checkpoint in Thailand from Vientiane, Laos
• Immigration clearance
• 12.45 pm – Ride tuk-tuk from the immigration checkpoint to Nong Khai – 50 baht. It’s also possible to walk to Nong Khai as it’s not very far, just a little over 1km

In & around Nong Khai

• 12.55 pm – Arrive in Nong Khai (dropped off at the Nong Khai train station)
• Purchased a one-way ticket for the overnight train departing at 7.10 pm that same day for Ayutthaya – 732 baht (2nd class sleeper, took the bottom bunk)
• 1.10 pm – Walk from the train station to Nong Khai town (under 20 minutes). Since there was plenty of time before the train departure, I decided to do some sightseeing around Nong Khai
• Quick coffee stop in Joon Poon cafe – Cafe latte (55 baht). Hung out in the cafe for a while since it had wifi, as I needed an internet connection to plan my trip ahead
• 3.00 pm – Walk from the cafe to Nong Thin park (under 20 minutes)
• 3.30 pm – 4.30 pm – Photo stop in Nong Thin park
• 4.35 pm – Walk from Nong Thin park to the riverside area, just directly north of the park (under 20 minutes)
• 5.00 pm – 6.00 pm – Photo stop around the riverside. Walked around the area and stayed there until almost sunset

Nong Khai to Ayutthaya by train

• 6.00 pm – Walk back from the riverside to Nong Khai train station (under 45 minutes)
• 6.45 pm – Back in Nong Khai train station. It’s a good idea to buy some light snacks and drinks before the train journey. Although they do serve meals onboard the train, they’re a bit on the pricey side
• 7.10 pm – Board overnight train bound for Ayutthaya

DAY 2

Arrival in Ayutthaya

• 4.10 am – Arrive in Ayutthaya train station. Since it was still very early, I took a short nap at the train station and freshened up afterwards
• 5.30 am – Went to the morning market across the road from the train station
• Breakfast at a stall in the morning market – Congee (15 baht)
• 6.00 am – Walk to the jetty at the end of the market (under 5 minutes) to take a ferry across the river to Ayutthaya ‘island’ – 5 baht (one way). Didn’t have to wait long for the ferry as it’s pretty frequent (once every 5-10 minutes)

In & around Ayutthaya

• 6.05 am – Hop off at the jetty on the other side of the river
• Rented a bicycle from a shop nearby the jetty to start my tour of Ayutthaya – 40 baht (renting for a day)
• 6.15 am – 7.30 am – Since it was still early, I decided to cycle around and do a bit of sightseeing around Ayutthaya town first.
• Visited the market near Naresuan road.
• Cycled to my accommodation (Somjai Place) in Ayutthaya (under 5 minutes). Unfortunately, the guesthouse didn’t allow me to check-in to my room yet so I left my luggage with the reception so I can continue touring Ayutthaya

Sightseeing around Ayutthaya

• 8.00 am – 10.00 am – Begin cycling tour around Ayutthaya Historical Park. Visited the following points of interest:
  • Wat Lang Ka. Small site near the guesthouse I was staying
  • Wat Khok Muang. Another small site on the way to Wat Maha That
  • Wat Maha That. Probably the most visited site in all of Ayutthaya. Its main highlight is the ‘Buddha’s head in a tree’. Paid the admission fee – 50 baht
• Apparently, there’s also a combined admission fee (believe it was 250 baht for the main temples). Didn’t think it was worth it since I was gonna do a lot of external viewing anyways
• Short break at So Sweet Bakery – Strawberry smoothie (60 baht)
• 10.30 am – 12.30 pm – Continue cycling tour. Visited more sites along the way:
  • Wat Ratchaburana. Another popular site just across the road from Wat Maha That. Only did external viewing as there’s an entrance fee (50 baht)
  • Wat Chun Saeng. Small site inside a parking lot near Wat Ratchaburana
  • Rama Park. A large, verdant park where I visited three more small sites, Wat Nok, Wat Langkhadum & Wat Sangkhapat
  • Wat Phra Ram. Large temple complex surrounded by a lake, after exiting Rama Park. Only did external viewing as there’s an entrance fee
• Lunch at a roadside stall nearby Khun Khum Paen & Ayutthaya Elephant Palace – Fried chicken with sticky rice (45 baht) & cha yen (20 baht)

Sightseeing around Ayutthaya (continued)

• 1.00 pm – 4.00 pm – Continue cycling tour of Ayutthaya after lunch. Visited the following points of interest:
  • Wat Lokayasutharam. A site with a large reclining Buddha. Very different from the other sites
  • Wat Chaiwatthanaram. Very large, well-preserved site and is probably one of Ayutthaya’s best-kept secrets. A bit off the beaten path and far off from everything else. There’s an entrance fee to enter – 50 baht
• 4.05 pm – Cycled from Wat Chaiwatthanaram to Uthong road opposite Ayutthaya hospital (under 30 minutes), where there are plenty of stalls selling roti saimai, a popular local delight. Bought a pack of roti saimai – 35 baht
• 4.45 pm – 6.45 pm – Cycled from Uthong road back to the guesthouse, stopping at a few sites along the way:
  • Vihara Phra Mongkhon Bophit. A large temple that was rebuilt housing one of the largest bronze Buddhas in Thailand
  • Wat Phra Sri Sanphet. Another site very close to Mongkhon Bophit, housing several chedis. Very beautiful during sunset, keep in mind you need to pay an entrance fee to enter (50 baht)
  • King Uthong monument. A small monument near Sri Sanphet

Back in Ayutthaya town

• 7.00 pm – Check-in to Somjai Place – 326 baht per night (staying for 1 night). Aside from my earlier gripe about not being able to check-in early, the room I got was really nice for the price.
• Had dinner at the night market, located along Naresuan road – Wanton noodles (50 baht)
• 10.00 pm – Return to guesthouse

DAY 3

Ayutthaya to Bangkok by train

• 10.00 am – Wake up. Pack up and check-out from the guesthouse
• Walked from the guesthouse to the market, near Naresuan road (under 10 minutes)
• Went to an ATM to withdraw some money. There’s a CIMB ATM here, surprisingly
• 11.45 am – Walked from the market to the jetty (under 5 minutes). Took the ferry from Ayutthaya ‘island’ across the river to other side – 5 baht (one way)
• 12.00 pm – Walked from the jetty to Ayutthaya train station (under 5 minutes)
• Purchased one-way ticket for the commuter train departing for Bangkok – 15 baht (3rd class, free seating)
  • Note: The same train also stops at Bang Pa-In and costs only 3 baht (one way)
• 1.20 pm – Board a train departing for Bangkok. Quite a long wait since there was a couple of delays

Arrival in Bangkok & getting to Chatuchak Weekend Market

• 3.00 pm – Arrive in Bangkok. Hopped off at Bang Sue train station, as I hoped to go to Chatuchak weekend market from here and didn’t want to go all the way to Hua Lamphong
• Walked from the train station to Bang Sue MRT station (under 10 minutes)
• 3.30 pm – Ride MRT to Kamphaeng Phet MRT station – 16 baht
• 3.35 pm – Arrive at Kamphaeng Phet MRT station. Walked to Chatuchak weekend market (under 5 minutes)
• 3.40 pm – 5.40 pm – Did some sightseeing and shopping in Chatuchak weekend market

JJ Green Market

• 5.45 pm – Walked to JJ Green Market (under 15 minutes after exiting gate #2 from Chatuchak weekend market). Very popular vintage night market in Bangkok, particularly with younger crowds
• Dinner at the food court in JJ Green – Mixed rice (50 baht), hotdog bacon skewers (40 baht) & watermelon shake (30 baht)
• 7.00 pm – 9.00 pm – Walking around and shopping in JJ Green Market

Getting to Pratunam & hostel check-in

• 9.05 pm – Walked from JJ Green to Mo Chit BTS station (under 20 minutes)
• 9.30 pm – Ride skytrain to Ratchathewi BTS station – 37 baht
  9.40 pm – Hop off at Ratchathewi BTS station. Walked from Ratchathewi to my accommodation in Pratunam (under 20 minutes)
• Check-in to Good Day Hostel – 380 baht per night. Staying for 3 nights (total cost – 1,140 baht). Very nice and modern capsule-style hostel, centrally located in the Pratunam area. The hosts were really friendly and helpful in giving me directions. Well worth the money in my opinion

DAY 4

In & around Pratunam

• 9.00 am – Wake up. No plans for the day, so I decided to do some sightseeing and food hunting
  Breakfast at a shop nearby the hostel – Chicken rice (50 baht)
• 11.00 am – Walked from the hostel to Platinum Mall (under 10 minutes)
• 11.30 am – 1.30 pm – Sightseeing and did some shopping at Platinum Mall, the largest fashion mall in Thailand. Good place to get t-shirts and tailor-made suits as souvenirs
• 1.30 pm – Walked from Platinum Mall to Central World nearby (under 10 minutes)
• 1.40 pm – 4.00 pm – More sightseeing and shopping in Central World, the largest mall in Thailand and one of the largest in the world

Pratunam to Asok

• 4.10 pm – Walked from Central World to Chitlom BTS station (under 10 minutes). Passed by Ratchaprasong junction and did a quick photo stop at Erawan Shrine. Entrance is free
• 4.35 pm – Ride skytrain to Asok BTS station – 25 baht
• 4.40 pm – Hop off at Asok BTS station. Walked from Asok to Terminal 21, located next to the BTS station (under 5 minutes)
• 4.50 pm – 7.10 pm – Did more sightseeing and shopping in Terminal 21, a very interesting mall where each floor is designed to fit a theme that reflects a different city or country. Makes you feel like you’re travelling the world in one place
• Late lunch in Pier 21 food court on the top floor – Seafood spaghetti (45 baht) & watermelon shake (25 baht)

Asok to Phetchaburi

• 7.15 pm – Walked from Terminal 21 to Sukhumvit MRT station (under 5 minutes)
• 7.40 pm – Ride MRT to Phetchaburi MRT station – 15 baht. Got delayed a little at the ticketing counter due to the long queues
• 7.45 pm – Hop off at Phetchaburi MRT station. Walked from Phetchaburi to the site of ArtBox Bangkok (under 5 minutes)
• 7.50 pm – 11.00 pm – Sightseeing and photo taking in ArtBox Bangkok, an increasingly popular night market with a very interesting concept, where most of the stalls are housed in shipping containers (let’s call it ‘container market’ from now on). The container market is held several times a year, however keep in mind that the venue changes year to year. Recently they’ve moved to EM District (just take a skytrain, then hop off at Phrom Phong BTS station)
• Had some light snacks at ArtBox – French fries & nuggets (79 baht)

Phetchaburi back to Pratunam

• 11.05 pm – Walked back to Phetchaburi MRT station from ArtBox (under 5 minutes). Ride MRT back to Sukhumvit MRT station – 15 baht
• 11.20 pm – Hop off at Sukhumvit MRT station. Walked to Asok BTS station (under 5 minutes)
• 11.30 pm – Ride skytrain to Siam BTS station – 28 baht
• 11.45 pm – Hop off at Siam BTS station. Walked back to the hostel from Siam (under 20 minutes)

DAY 5

Day trip to Samut Songkhram

• 9.00 am – Wake up
• Breakfast at a stall nearby the hostel – Waffle (19 baht) & iced latte (35 baht)
• 9.50 am – Walk from the hostel to Ratchathewi BTS station (under 20 minutes). Ride skytrain to Victory Monument BTS station – 22 baht
• 10.35 am – Hop off at Victory Monument BTS Station. Walk to the minibus station, located directly below Victory Monument station (under 5 minutes via exit #4 from the station)
• At Victory Monument, simply walk up to the counter and pay up. You’ll be pointed to your vehicle once they have enough people to start the trip
• 10.50 am – Ride minibus to Maeklong market, my first stop in Samut Songkhram – 70 baht
  • Note: From Victory Monument, you can also take the minibus directly to Amphawa floating market, costs 80 baht per way

Maeklong Market

• 12.00 pm – Arrive in Samut Songkhram (dropped off at Maeklong market)
• 12.05 pm – 1.00 pm – Sightseeing around Maeklong railway market. Unfortunately, there were no passing trains around the time of my visit due to ongoing maintenance. Despite that, the market is still a cool place to hang around for an hour or more
• 1.05 pm – Ride songthaew (blue colour with letters “amphawa”) from Maeklong market (the stop is in front of a 7-11 nearby the market) to Amphawa floating market – 20 baht

Amphawa Floating Market

• 1.20 pm – Hop off at Amphawa floating market
• Walked to the minibus stop (near the entrance to Amphawa floating market) to book my seat for the 7pm minibus back to Bangkok – 80 baht. Was informed that the last minibus is at 8.30pm
• 1.40 pm – 6.30 pm – Sightseeing and food hunting around Amphawa floating market. Compared to Damnoen Saduak, Amphawa was more authentic, far less touristy and had more to offer in contrast
• Had late lunch at one of the floating stalls there – Prawns, scallops and seafood curry (315 baht)

Samut Songkhram back to Bangkok

• 7.30 pm – Ride minibus back to Bangkok
• 9.15 pm – Arrive in Bangkok (dropped off at Victory Monument). Walked to Victory Monument BTS station (under 5 minutes)
• 9.30 pm – Ride skytrain to Ratchathewi BTS station – 22 baht
• 9.45 pm – Hop off at Ratchathewi BTS station. Walked back to the hostel from Ratchathewi (under 20 minutes)

DAY 6

Bangkok to Hua Hin by train

• 7.30 am – Wake up. Pack up and check-out from the hostel
• 8.00 am – Walked from the hostel to Siam BTS station (under 20 minutes). Ride skytrain to Sala Daeng BTS station – 22 baht
• 8.30 am – Hop off at Sala Daeng BTS station. Walked from Sala Daeng to Silom MRT station (under 10 minutes). Ride MRT to Hua Lamphong MRT station – 19 baht
• 8.55 am – Hop off at Hua Lamphong MRT station. Walked to Hua Lamphong train station (under 5 minutes via exit #2)
• Purchased one-way ticket for the 9.20 am train departing for Hua Hin – 44 baht (3rd class, free seating)
• 9.20 am – Board train bound for Hua Hin. Bought some breakfast from some peddlers onboard the train – Fried chicken & sticky rice (30 baht)

Arrival in Hua Hin

• 1.40 pm – Arrive in Hua Hin (hop off at Hua Hin train station)
• 1.50 pm – 2.20 pm – Quick photo ops around Hua Hin train station, one of the oldest in Thailand. It has a unique architecture and is one of a kind
• Walked from the train station to my accommodation in Hua Hin (under 10 minutes). Check-in to Say Cheese Guesthouse – 366 baht per night. Staying for 2 nights (total cost – 732 baht). Really liked the location, many things in town are within walking distance, such as the night market and bus stop. The room was pretty good for the price too

In & around Hua Hin

• 3.00 pm – Walked from the guesthouse to Hua Hin beach (under 20 minutes)
• 3.30 pm – 7.00 pm – Sightseeing and photo taking at Hua Hin beach. The beach was pretty average at best, however it’s still nice enough if you just like long walks on the beach. Stayed around until sunset before heading back to town
• 7.30 pm – Shopping and sightseeing around the night market
• Had dinner at one of the stalls there – Fried mussels with eggs (50 baht) & pork satay (40 baht)
• 9.30 pm – Return to the guesthouse

DAY 7

Day trip to Cha-Am

• 9.00 am – Wake up. Rented a scooter from the guesthouse – 200 baht for full day use
• 9.30 am – Ride from the guesthouse to Plearnwan Eco Village, the first stop of my day trip
• 9.45 am – 11.00 am – Sightseeing and photo taking in Plearnwan Eco Village. Entrance is free. Most interesting aspect about Plearnwan is almost everything there is made from recyclables
• 11.05 am – Continue on to Cha-Am from Plearnwan
• 11.30 am – 1.30 pm – Sightseeing around Cha-Am beach. A lot like Hua Hin beach, just slightly more interesting
• Had lunch at Kingkong steak restaurant in Cha-Am – Chicken steak (79 baht) & lychee shake (40 baht)

Day trip to Cha-Am (continued)

• 1.35 pm – Continue on to Swiss Sheep Farm from Cha-Am
• 2.00 pm – 4.00 pm – Photo stop and sightseeing at Swiss Sheep Farm. Paid the entrance fee – 120 baht. As its name suggests, it’s a sheep farm with lots of photo opportunities. Among its highlights are feeding the animals (you get to feed the sheep for free, which I thought was cool) and the alpaca enclosure (keep in mind you have to pay an additional 100 baht to enter)
• 4.05 pm – Continue to Santorini Park, my last stop of the day. Paid the admission to enter – 150 baht
• 4.30 pm – 6.00 pm – Sightseeing around Santorini Park. Came expecting a mini Santorini, left feeling a little disappointed. Not worth the admission price at all, give this place a skip unless you have plenty of time to spare

Back in Hua Hin

• 6.30 pm – Return to Hua Hin
• 7.15 pm – Arrive back in Hua Hin. Return to guesthouse for a shower and rest
• 9.00 pm – Walked to the night market (under 5 minutes) for dinner and some last minute shopping. Had dinner at Duong Jai seafood stall – Curry crabs & stir-fried vegetables (230 baht). Got a massage at a parlor in the night market – 169 baht
• 11.00 pm – Return to the guesthouse to rest up for the next day

DAY 8

In & around Hua Hin (continued)

• 7.00 am – Wake up
• 7.30 am – Ride from the guesthouse to Hin Lek Fai viewpoint (under 10 minutes)
• 7.40 am – 8.40 am – Photo stop and sightseeing at Hin Lek Fai viewpoint. Entrance is free. There are a few lookout points here, but what I liked best were the views from the first one (the metal platform with the signboard) and the third one
• 8.45 am – Ride back down to Hua Hin town. Had breakfast at Le P’Tit Cafe, near the guesthouse I was staying – Fried eggs, bacon & sausages & orange juice (80 baht)
• 10.00 am – Return to guesthouse to pack up and check-out

Hua Hin back to Bangkok

• 11.30 am – Walked to the bus stop (under 5 minutes). Purchased a one-way ticket for the bus departing at 12pm for Bangkok – 169 baht
• 12.00 pm – Board bus bound for Bangkok

Back in Bangkok & getting to Khaosan road

• 2.55 pm – Arrive in Bangkok (dropped off at the Southern Bus Terminal, also known as Sai Tai Mai to locals)
• 3.25 pm – Ride bus #511 from Sai Tai Mai – 15 baht
• 3.50 pm – Hop off at Khaosan Road. Walked to my accommodation in Khaosan road (under 10 minutes)
• Check-in to Green House Hostel – 479 baht per night (staying for 1 night). Great location, within walking distance to Khaosan road. It does get a little noisy at night, but I guess it’s okay if you’re just staying for a night

Khaosan road to Asiatique

• 10 pm – Walked from the hostel to Phra Athit pier (under 10 minutes)
• 5.35 pm – Ride boat from Phra Athit to Sathorn pier – 15 baht
• 6.00 pm – Hop off at Sathorn pier. Walked to the other side of the pier to ride the free shuttle boat to Asiatique. Didn’t have to wait too long for the shuttle boat, it’s frequent enough, though you may have to wait a while if there’s a long queue ahead of you
• 6.15 pm – 8.00 pm – Sightseeing and photo taking in Asiatique. Very popular place for crowds to hangout, busiest time is from sunset to late evening

Asiatique to Yaowarat road

• 8.05 pm – Ride shuttle boat back to Sathorn pier (under 10 minutes). Since there was no boat back to Phra Athit (last boat is at 8pm, though this may vary), I decided to take a bus to Yaowarat first, then onward to Khaosan road
• Walked to the bus stop near Saphan Taksin BTS station (under 15 minutes)
• 8.40 pm – Ride bus #1 to Yaowarat road – 9 baht
• 8.45 pm – Hop off at Yaowarat road
• 8.50 pm – 10.25 pm – Sightseeing around Yaowarat road. Had dinner at some of the roadside stalls there – Wanton noodles (50 baht) & leng chee kang (50 baht)

Yaowarat to Khaosan road

• 10.30 pm – Ride bus #53 from Yaowarat to Khaosan road – 6.50 baht
• 10.45 pm – Hop off near Phra Athit. Walked back to Khaosan road (under 10 minutes)
• 11.00 pm – 2.00 am – Spent the remainder of my evening around Khaosan road before heading back to my hostel to end the day

DAY 9

Khaosan to MBK Center

• 10.00 am – Wake up. Pack up and check-out from the hostel
• 11.00 am – 1.15 pm – Walked from Khaosan road to Panfa Leelard pier. Quick photo stops at several points of interest along the way, such as:
  • Democracy Monument
  • Pom Mahakan Fort
  • Golden Mount (Wat Saket). There’s no entrance fee if you want to enter the compound, but you need to pay 10 baht if you want to climb to the top
• 1.25 pm – Ride khlong boat from Panfa Leelard to Saphan Hua Chang pier – 9 baht
• 1.35 pm – Hop off at Saphan Hua Chang pier. Walked from the pier to MBK Center (under 15 minutes)
• 2.00 pm – 4.00 pm – Last minute shopping in MBK Center. Had lunch at the food court there – Chicken steak (95 baht) & watermelon shake (40 baht)

MBK Center to Airport

• 4.00 pm – Walked from MBK Center to National Stadium BTS station (under 5 minutes). Ride skytrain to Mo Chit BTS station (interchange at Siam station) – 42 baht
• 4.35 pm – Hop off at Mo Chit BTS station
• 4.50 pm – Ride A1 bus from Mo Chit to Don Mueang international airport – 30 baht
• 5.20 pm – Hop off at Don Mueang international airport
• 7.00 pm – Board flight (Air Asia) bound for home – RM 170 (one way)
