In fact, the bustling capital of Kuala Lumpur is secretly a shopping mecca in Southeast Asia with scores of shopping malls and outlet stores. Over the years, people living in the city have practically seen a new major mall built almost every year.

Other than KL itself, Klang Valley — which includes Selangor and Putrajaya — is also full of shopping havens. With plenty of mega sales that happen throughout the year, you can bet that retail therapy is not in short supply. Not sure where to shop for the best deals? 1. Sunway Pyramid Mall

Located in the neighbouring state of Selangor, Sunway Pyramid Mall is one of the most famous shopping malls in Klang Valley. Best known for the iconic lion-headed sphinx at the entrance, Sunway Pyramid Mall is one of the largest shopping malls in Malaysia. Opened in 1997, this 1.7-million-square-foot shopping paradise boasts more than 1,000 retailers! It’s divided into two wings: the original Old Wing which features Egyptian motifs, and the New Wing which is a more modern extension. The mall also has an indoor ice skating rink where international ice skating competitions happen from time to time!

It also houses plenty of international food outlets and plenty of boba stores, making this a prime hangout spot for youngsters. Trust me, if you want to check out the entire mall, you’d best clear out your schedule for the day because this isn’t a one- or two-hour stroll!

Within the grounds of Sunway Pyramid also lies Sunway Lagoon, a winner of the TripZilla Excellence Awards 2023 – Best Family Attraction. This epic water park offers wild rides, slip-n-slides, and splashing good times. The Lagoon features equally engaging and fun attractions for adults and children alike, making every visit there a fun family experience that leaves people wanting more.

2. Suria KLCC

One of the most iconic structures in Kuala Lumpur is the Petronas Twin Towers. Whether you’re a tourist or a local, the sight of the majestic structure, especially at night, is simply stunning. However, the Twin Towers aren’t just a decorative piece of the Kuala Lumpur skyline. Housed within the first six storeys of the towers is Suria KLCC, one of the most popular shopping malls, not just in the city but in the entire country. With over 320 different stores including luxury retail brands and upscale food and beverage options, Suria KLCC offers a wide range of shopping and dining experiences.

Apart from offering endless hours of retail therapy, Suria KLCC also houses plenty of tourist destinations. These include the Petronas Art Gallery, Petrosains, Aquaria KLCC and KLCC Park. 3. Pavilion KL

Personally, Pavilion KL (or Pavillion Bukit Bintang) is one of my favourite Kuala Lumpur shopping malls. This 1.37-million-square-foot shopping hotspot first opened in 2007 and is now home to more than 450 different retail stores. Conveniently located in the bustling Bukit Bintang area (itself a prominent location for ambient nightlife), Pavilion is one of the most frequently visited shopping malls in the city. It is especially crowded in the evenings. Even on the outside, you will find a sea of people just hanging out and chilling, thanks mostly to the relaxing vibes around the area. You’ll also find a Liuli Crystal fountain at the main entrance, which is a popular Instagram hotspot.

Inside, you’ll find a plethora of international designer brands next to household brands Malaysians know and love. Like any shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur, Pavilion comes with a whole host of eateries and entertainment outlets, including Malaysia’s first-ever branch of China’s Dadi Cinema Complex. In addition, Starhill Gallery, which is a shopping mall that caters specifically to luxury brands, is located right next door. Even more retail therapy (or window shopping), yay! Like Suria KLCC, getting to Pavilion is an absolute breeze, thanks to the multitude of public transport options.

4. Mid Valley Megamall

Mid Valley Megamall is easily the most crowded Kuala Lumpur shopping mall on this list. This massive complex just outside of Bangsar is a regular haunt for locals from both the city centre and the Klang Valley. Reaching 4.5-million-square-foot, Midvalley Megamall is home to a wide selection of mid to high-end retailers, not to mention more food options than you can possibly count. What’s more, in 2007, Mid Valley Megamall added The Gardens, a luxury shopping mall that is housed in a separate area, offering even more shopping options to customers. Both malls are linked via a bridge and an underground corridor.

In terms of entertainment, Midvalley Megamall is famous for its large cinema complex and bowling alleys. It is also home to a massive convention centre where some of the city’s top events often take place.

5. Berjaya Times Square

Boasting an area of 7.5 million square ft, Berjaya Times Square is one of the biggest shopping malls in Kuala Lumpur. Located in the heart of the city in the Bukit Bintang area, it houses over 1,000 retail outlets and more than 60 F&B options. It is one of the more dated shopping malls in the city, having opened back in 2003. However, don’t be put off by the age of the building! It’s still one of the most popular malls in the area, with a wide range of retail therapy options ranging from established brands to local brick-and-mortar businesses. What’s more, Berjaya Times Square also houses Malaysia’s largest indoor theme park, filled with 14 unique rides that promise fun for the whole family!

6. Plaza Low Yat

For a different kind of shopping experience, check out Plaza Low Yat (or simply Low Yat as known by the locals). You won’t find the typical clothing boutiques or novelty stationery shops here. Instead, Low Yat is one of the most famous Kuala Lumpur shopping malls where customers look to score bargain deals for electronics and IT products. In short, it’s basically Malaysia’s version of Hong Kong’s Sham Shui Po. You can find just about anything here: from the latest iPhone and gaming consoles to laptops and GoPros and even bootlegged versions of the latest gadgets. Of course, you didn’t hear that from me, alright?

Bargaining is quite normal here although you probably shouldn’t approach this like a night market. Prices are already at an affordable level due to the many competing outlets that set up shop next to each other. If you feel hungry and need a break from your hi-tech retail therapy, there are some eateries located on the ground floor, including Korean and Japanese restaurants.

7. Sungei Wang Plaza

Older malls tend to lose their crowd over time, but Sungei Wang Plaza, which opened way back in 1977, seems to have stood the test of time so far. This timeless shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur boasts seven storeys and is a well-known destination to pick up affordable bargains. The 1.2-million-square-foot complex houses a large variety of kiosks and small shops that offer merchandise ranging from handphones and computer accessories to clothing and jewellery. While Sungei Wang Plaza isn’t the most famous KL shopping mall, it certainly is one of the more historical ones. It even houses Star Tattoo Studio, one of the most famous tattoo parlours in the city, in case you want to get inked while on a shopping trip.

8. Sunway Velocity Mall

Among all the Kuala Lumpur shopping malls on this list, Sunway Velocity Mall is easily the shiniest. With its official opening in 2016, this nine-storey mall covering almost 1 million square ft features an eye-catching neo-futuristic exterior. Sunway Velocity also has a covered walkway to two MRT stations (Cochrane and Maluri), making it a highly accessible shopping paradise. In this complex, you’ll find a wide variety of local and international brands (over 500 retail outlets!), a cinema and even a fitness centre. There are plenty of eateries and food kiosks scattered around the mall at the basement and top levels, too!

9. MyTOWN Shopping Centre

Another KL shopping mall is MyTOWN Shopping Centre, situated near the KL city centre and housing over 400 local and international retailers. Its main attraction is Malaysia’s largest IKEA outlet. Other than known anchor tenants such as H&M, Parkson, and Village Grocer, the mall is also home to the largest Zara outlet in Malaysia. Outside the mall, you’ll find a landscaped park that’s designed with ramps and tracks for rollerblading and skateboarding.

10. Lot 10 Shopping Mall

For nearly three decades, Lot 10 has been one of the most iconic shopping malls in Kuala Lumpur. It is located along the bustling Bukit Bintang Street and houses some prominent tenants like H&M, Isetan, and Don Don Donki. Lot 10 consists of a total of six floors, with an open-air rooftop cafe at the top named Eden Cafe that features a view of the KL Tower.

Lot 10 is one of my personal favourite Kuala Lumpur shopping malls in the Golden Triangle area. For Japanese food lovers, I highly recommend visiting the fourth floor. The entire floor is filled with Japanese eateries, from high-end yakiniku places to affordable ramen bars. Besides, don’t miss out on Don Don Donki’s scrumptious wagyu beef skewers right in front of the mall’s entrance!

11. Fahrenheit88

Also located along Bukit Bintang Street and right opposite Pavilion KL, Farenheit88 is another KL shopping mall that is worth a visit. This mall is perfect for shopaholics who appreciate fashion and beauty, as it has some of the most affordable and largest fashion retail stores in the country, like Uniqlo and Brands Outlet, as well as a Sephora beauty store. Farenhiet88 has a total of seven floors and a total number of 280 stores and services, both indoor and outdoor.

12. Avenue K Shopping Mall

Many tend to miss out on Avenue K, a KL shopping mall located right opposite the famous Suria KLCC. Although it is not as grand and massive as Suria KLCC, Avenue K offers a wide range of local and international brands, as well as a lot of fun activities you can participate in. There are multiple entertainment options here: Breakout, an escape room with various themes; Karaoke Manekineko, one of Japan’s biggest karaoke chains; and SUPERPARK Malaysia, a family-friendly, all-inclusive indoor activity park. 

Having been to all of the entertainment venues here, I would say that it is worth every penny, and I definitely feel like coming back again. Both Breakout and SUPERPARK Malaysia are suitable for adrenaline junkies, while the karaoke spot offers affordable packages that include snacks and unlimited drinks. Plus, there is also a mini library and a grocery store here.

13. 1 Utama Shopping Centre

One U, or 1 Utama Shopping Centre, is the go-to shopping mall in Klang Valley for locals. It is one of the largest shopping malls in Malaysia, spanning 5,590,000 square feet. The mall houses a total of 713 stores and is divided into Old Wing and New Wing. There are three department stores, Aeon, Parkson, and Isetan, plus two cinemas, TGV and GSC Cinemas, all under one roof.

Due to its size and the abundance of stores, locals describe One U as maze-like; you can easily get lost in the mall if it’s your first time! Other than what you can expect in a normal shopping mall, 1 Utama Shopping Centre is also home to attractions like The Secret Garden, Sports n’ Play, The Ledge Art Gallery, a surfing centre called FlowRider, an indoor skydiving wind tunnel called WINDLAB, Asia’s largest indoor rock climbing gym, and so much more.

14. IOI City Mall

Situated within the IOI Resort City in Putrajaya, IOI City Mall is undoubtedly one of the best shopping malls in Klang Valley. The mall opened in 2014 and had an extension in 2022. Both Phase 1 and the addition of Phase 2 have a total lettable area of 2.5 million square feet combined, making it the largest mall in Malaysia. It is a mall with great accessibility, and especially perfect for shopaholics who live around Putrajaya, Seri Kembangan, Bangi, and other parts of Southern Klang Valley.

Aside from a variety of fashion, beauty, lifestyle and dining brands, IOI City Mall also features several main attractions. That includes District 21, an indoor amusement centre; The Symphony Walk which features astonishing dancing musical fountains and al fresco unique dining concept; and IOI City Farm, an indoor urban farm park with more than 70 species of plants and adorable animals. If you don’t feel like spending money, I personally recommend visiting The Symphony Walk. It is free and you can even walk further to the Creative Park filled with colourful LED night lights.

15. IOI Mall Puchong

Another shopping mall in Klang Valley is IOI Mall Puchong. Since its opening in 1996, IOI Mall has been one of the locals’ favourite places to go during the weekends. I remember longing to visit the mall when I was a kid, just to get a ride on its iconic, magical carousel that was bought from the United States. 

IOI Mall Puchong features two buildings, Old Wing and New Wing, and there are approximately 250 stores. It also incorporates Mediterranean architecture, which makes its exterior stand out from other malls in Kuala Lumpur and Klang Valley.

16. The LINC KL

Regarded as one of the hidden gems in KL and a vibrant Instagrammable spot in the city, The LINC KL is one of the best shopping malls in KL if you enjoy a smaller crowd. It is located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, only around ten minutes away from the Petronas Twin Towers. 

Since a few years ago, the mall has already been a hot spot for picture-taking due to its colourful stairs, rainbow paper cranes, and vibrant art murals. Don’t miss stopping by the massive tree in the middle of the mall, a not-so-secret cafe where visitors can sit down, relax, and dine in between shopping sprees.

17. The Mines Shopping Mall

The Mines Shopping Mall in Seri Kembangan is another classic shopping mall in Klang Valley. The most prominent attraction here is that it is built around a canal, pretty similar to The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore. Visitors can hop on a Mine Cruise boat ride and enjoy the captivating lush green scenery and panoramic views of the man-made lake. 

The mall is connected to the Mines International Exhibition & Convention Centre, Philea Mines Beach Resort, and The Mines Resort & Golf Club. It contains five floors, and a wide range of retail, food and beverage, homewares, and family edutainment options.

18. Mitsui Outlet Park KLIA Sepang

If you have just arrived at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and want to experience what it’s like shopping in Malaysia ASAP, head to Mitsui Outlet Park KLIA Sepang. This factory outlet mall is only about 10 minutes away from KLIA and KLIA2, and there is even a free shuttle bus service that brings you to and fro the mall from the airport. 

Mitsui Outlet Park is home to a lot of exciting deals from upper-middle to high-end off-season brands, as well as an array of mouthwatering food options, including local Malay cuisines, Japanese restaurants, western delights, and a food court. The mall embodies four different Paradise Village concepts, allowing visitors to experience luxury, modern ambience, and greenery all at the same time.

19. LaLaport Bukit Bintang City Centre

Also owned by the Mitsui Fudosan Group like Mitsui Outlet Park, Lalaport is situated within the Bukit Bintang City Centre. Since its opening in 2022, this shopping mall in KL has received much attention for its Japanese-inspired concept and its unique and mesmerising architecture. It is also Southeast Asia’s first-ever Lalaport mall. 

Although some stores are still yet to open, many visitors enjoy coming to the mall for its aesthetically pleasing spots. For instance, the LED-illuminated staircase Grand Steps, the rooftop garden that boasts a view of the Merdeka 118, and the futuristic WOW Plaza are all quite famous. There are also a wide variety of Japanese brands, from electronics and furniture to restaurants and dessert places.

20. Pavilion Bukit Jalil

Spanning five floors with a total of 1.8 million square feet of retail space, Pavilion Bukit Jalil (also known as Pavilion 2) is another one of the best Kuala Lumpur shopping malls. It is located in the heart of Bukit Jalil and offers easy access via highways such as the Bukit Jalil Highway, MRR2 Highway, KESAS Highway, and Maju Expressway (MEX). The mall is quite new as it opened only a few years ago in December 2021.

Pavilion Bukit Jalil houses notable tenants like Parkson, The Food Merchant, Harvey Norman, Grand Harbour Restaurant & Banquet, Sports Direct, Toys ‘R Us, Uniqlo and more. There is also Blue Ice Snow Park where visitors can relish activities such as ice skating, and playing with snow. TGV Cinemas has also recently opened in the mall, making it very convenient for moviegoers who live around the area.
