Marcy MinianoIt has been almost two years since Anthony Bourdain passed away, but there’s no denying that his legacy is still very much alive. Well, that legacy is about to go further as a book written by him and his longtime assistant Laurie Woolever will be out later this year. Aptly titled World Travel: An Irreverent Guide, it goes on sale on 13 October and is now available for pre-order!

The late travel documentarian and celebrity chef had been working on the book before his untimely death in June 2018. The upcoming book, to be published by Ecco Press, is described in a press release as a part-memoir, part-guidebook. It narrates “a life of experience collected into an entertaining, practical, fun, and frank travel guide that gives readers an introduction to some of his favourite places.” The guide is supplemented by essays from Bourdain’s friends, family, and colleagues.
A first look at the cover was exclusively released by a U.S. magazine. Sketched by cartoonist Tony Millionaire, it depicts Bourdain sitting outside a Parisian café, incognito with his dark sunglasses, and drinking (what seems to be) coffee. More original illustrations by Millionaire will be showcased at the start of every chapter.

“This book will allow Tony’s fans and followers to continue to travel in his footsteps,” said Woolever, co-author and Bourdain’s mentee. She also co-wrote Bourdain’s final cookbook, Appetites. Fans of the globetrotting chef can expect to witness once more his “off-the-beaten-path, impossibly cool approach to travel” through this written work.
Bourdain was launched into mainstream consciousness back in 1997, when his article titled Don’t Read Before Eating This came out in The New Yorker. His scathing firsthand account offered a brutally honest perspective on New York City restaurant kitchens. In 2000, he released an extension to this article through a bestselling book titled Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly.
Eventually, Bourdain started to have his own TV shows, the most famous one being the CNN travel and food show, Parts Unknown. During his five-year stint for that show, Bourdain was said to have travelled to almost 100 countries in a single year.
