You can explore historical hiking trails

Autumn provides ideal conditions for your hiking in South Korea, particularly in Busan! Whether you are an experienced hiker or a first-timer, Geumjeongsan has just the hiking experience for you. Explore the gates, walls, and watchtowers of the Geumjeongsanseong Fortress, which represents Korea’s military history as you hike along trails adorned with autumn colours. The longest trail here spans 12.1km from the Hwamyeong Arboretum to the Geumgang cable car platform. If you choose this trail, do factor in some time to explore the arboretum and even set up a picnic there!

If hiking isn’t for you, catch the Geumgang cable car which will take you up to the peak in just 6 minutes so you won’t miss out on the city and mountain views! 

K-drama filming spots look even more stunning in autumn

Follow in the footsteps of your favorite K-drama actresses from Strong Girl Nam Soon by strolling on the pristine Haeundae Beach! Marvel at the stunning contrast between the natural beauty of the sandy shores and the glass skyscrapers in the background. 

If you’re into something more romantic, head to Cheongsapo Station of the Haeundae Blueline Park and hop into one of the colourful sky capsules where Song Hye Kyo and Jang Ki Yong reunited in their drama Now, We Are Breaking Up. This leisurely ride will give you time to take in the beautiful coastal view of the East Sea!

It’s the perfect time to visit Joseon Dynasty landmarks

Be transported back in time through the Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival happening from 4 to 6 Oct 2024. Activities are designed to recreate life in the Joseon Dynasty. Learn about traditional events such as military training, martial arts practices, and parades through performances and events. The atmosphere is further enhanced by the Hwaseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site, that remains largely intact from the 18th century. 

You can celebrate harvest traditions with locals

Yeoju is known for its agricultural productsrice, sweet potatoes, melons and peanuts to name a few. Buy local produce and other speciality products from the markets at the Yeoju Ogok Naru Festival from 18 to 20 Oct 2024. This festival allows you to celebrate a successful harvest with the farmers as you enjoy the fruits of their labour. Don’t miss the roasted sweet potatoes and Ogok Bibimbap (five-grain mixed rice bowl)!

Autumn in Jeonju-si

The dreamy weather is perfect for your ideal hanbok experience

Autumn in Korea perfectly balances the sweltering summer heat and chilly winter winds. With pleasantly air-conditioned temperatures, autumn provides a refreshing respite from the sticky Singapore humidity. This is an ideal season to leisurely explore the Jeonju Hanok Village, comfortably dressed in hanbok. Choose from racks of traditional to modern styles and snap away at the beautiful photo zones. Just be warned, these near-perfect temperatures and the idyllic village are bound to have you coming back!

You can warm yourself up by making some traditional Jeonju delicacies

Did you know that Bibimbap originated from Jeonju? While this dish is popular not just in Korea but all over the world, authentic Jeonju Bibimbap has a strong sesame oil and gochujang taste and is topped with beef tartare. 

There are many souvenirs you can buy easily, but why not invest in learning this skill instead? Take part in a fun and useful cooking class so you know how to satisfy your Bibimbap cravings back home. The process is relatively simple shred, stir fry and plate the ingredients and you are ready to dig in!

You can admire performances at the Andong Mask Dance Festival 

Experience Talchum, a traditional Korean mask dance, at the Andong Mask Dance Festival from 27 Sep to 6 Oct 2024. This is a performing art that incorporates dancing and dialogue into performances. If you’re getting tired of walking, the Gangchon Rail Park provides a fun alternative! Effortlessly pedal your way through the countryside, taking in the breathtaking views of the Bukhan River and surrounding mountains. The disused railway track passes through multiple tunnels which have been decorated with pinwheels, lights and even bubble machines. Each tunnel offers a unique surprise!

Autumn in Jeju

There are plenty of seasonal food options to savour

Oak trees produce an abundant supply of acorns during the autumn season. As such, acorn jelly has become a key snack and side dish loved by many Koreans. It can be enjoyed plain or spiced up with cut chilli, soy sauce and sesame seeds! 

If you have a sweet tooth, go for tangerines instead! Multiple farms in Jeju have tangerine picking experiences for you to try. Tangerine season starts in October so don’t miss this opportunity! In true Korean fashion, end your meal with this citrus fruit as your dessert. Not only are they a tangy delight, but they’re also packed with health benefits such as being high in antioxidants and aiding metabolism!

Autumn scenery in Jeju is so Instaworthy!

The Osulloc Tea Museum seeks to spread the rich history and flavours of Korean tea. Sip on their high quality teas as you gaze at the expansive green tea field. Snack on the delicious green tea flavoured roll cakes, waffles and ice cream! They also have an extensive selection of teas, including tea bags and loose tea leaves for pear tea, camellia flower tea, canola flower tea to name a few. You’ll be spoiled for choice!

Autumn in Daegu

You can spend a relaxing afternoon by a tranquil lake

Originally a reservoir to store water for agricultural purposes, Suseongmot has now transformed into a leisure destination favoured by locals. The mountainous skyline is the perfect backdrop as you watch families walking their dogs and friends playing basketball. For a different type of experience, consider riding a duck boat. This lake is definitely a delightful spot to catch the astounding autumn sunset, offering a serene end to the evening. 

The scenery during autumn is simply breathtaking

The Apsan Observatory provides a sweeping cityscape view of Daegu. Echoing the words of Kim Seo Jun from What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim, the view is like Park Min Young flawless, and the observatory like himself, standing on top of the mountain. Take a cable car or embark on a short one hour hike up to live out this K-drama moment! The observatory certainly serves its purpose to make not just ‘Secretary Kim’ but anyone feel better, rejuvenate your mind and soul as you gaze at the outstanding panoramic views here!

The ginseng experience doesn’t have to end here! Take home a variety of specialty products from ginseng tea to ginseng mask packs, savouring the benefits well beyond the festival.

I see the light: take part in a mesmerizing lantern festival

Want the magical Tangled lantern festival experience? Then the Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival from 5 to 20 Oct 2024 is not to be missed! Watch as the Namgang River transforms into something from the movie with thousands of floating lights and lanterns. Similar floating lanterns were part of a military tactic to obstruct Japanese soldiers from infiltrating through the river during the Jinjuseong Fortress Battle of the Imjin War. Visitors now hang their wish lanterns both as a symbol of hope and to add to the festive spirit!

Witness the mystical beauty of the traditional fireworks display

You may have seen the Haman Nakhwa Festival featured on the popular Korean reality variety show 2 Days & 1 Night. On 31 Oct 2024, experience the magic of Nakwa Nori. While traditional fireworks light up the skies in seconds, these traditional Joseon fireworks, provide a slow burn as each charcoal-coated firework stick is individually lit up. They were traditionally lit to wish for stability and a prosperous harvest. Now, wish papers containing our various hopes and dreams are hung and lit with the Nakhwa sticks. You will then witness a mesmerizing display of fire sparks from the charcoal powder gently falling into the water.
