How the best cities in the world were ranked
Unlike most best-of lists which rely heavily on data, Resonance’s annual ranking considers a combination of many different factors. This results in a list that provides a holistic look at the world’s best cities. According to Chris Fair, president and CEO of Resonance Consultancy, “It’s not just best city to live, it’s not just best city to work, or best city to visit. It’s taking a cross-section of those factors.”
Resonance Consultancy evaluates its list of the best cities based on the following criteria:
- Place: Weather, safety, sights, and landmarks
- People: Educational attainment and percentage of citizens in the labour force
- Programming: Experiences offered in areas of culture, nightlife, dining, and shopping
- Product: Infrastructure and institutions
- Prosperity: Number of Global 500 corporate headquarters in the city, GDP per capita, income equality index, and the unemployment rate
- Promotion: Online popularity
Ranking the best cities
- London, England
- Paris, France
- New York City, United States
- Tokyo, Japan
- Dubai, United Arab Emirates

According to Resonance, Singapore deserves top spots for its “famous hawker stall street food, its garden-like airport terminal, and the reopened Raffles Singapore Hotel.”
