In case you didn’t know, Nintendo and Super Mario have been working on an upcoming Super Mario Bros. CG animated movie. They’ve been very secretive about the details since they started to collaborate, but they’ve finally updated the fans with an official voice cast. Lo and behold, they’ve chosen Chris Pratt to be the voice of Mario!

The secret was revealed by none other than Mario creator Shigeuru Miyamoto who said, “Mario will be talking a lot in the movie.” Chris Pratt, who’s a Marvel superstar from the movie Guardians of the Galaxy, doesn’t have the high-pitched voice of Mario at all. So it looks like we’re expecting the new Mario to have a voice with a lower register, at least for the Super Marios Bros. movie. Besides, maybe the high-pitched voice isn’t exactly a pleasant thing to hear repeatedly when projected on the big screen compared to video games.
The decision to cast Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario is a brave move. His stardom as a Marvel superhero might outshine the iconic Nintendo character, but then again Pratt has consistently proven that he can bring on the right comedy and energy regardless of the character he’s portraying. For now, we can say that he’s proven enough for us to give him a chance.
Chris Pratt wasn’t the only Super Mario voice actor that Miyamoto revealed. He also said that the characters of Peach, Luigi, and Bowser will be voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, and Jack Black respectively. Aside from this, the movie will draw from Nintendo’s Donkey Kong and Wrecking Crew franchises, with Seth Rogan voicing Donkey Kong.

Fans of the original in-game voice of Mario (Charles Martinet) can rest easy. Miyamoto assured that Martinet will still make surprise cameos in the movie. You can watch the full video of Miyamoto talking about the movie below:
The Super Mario Bros. CG movie will be released in December 2022 in North America. Miyamoto will announce release dates for Japan and other regions at a later time.
