What’s Happening in the Democratic Republic of Congo?
Since Oct 24, a new, mystery disease has been spreading in the Panzi health zone of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It’s primarily affecting children and people who are severely malnourished. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that 406 cases have been identified, with 31 lives lost as of early December.
What About Singapore?
Singapore has several factors working in its favour:
- Low Travel Volume: There isn’t much travel between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Singapore.
- No Direct Flights: Without direct flights connecting the two countries, the chances of the disease making its way here are further reduced.
Additionally, Singapore already has stringent health measures at its borders – All incoming travellers must declare symptoms like fever, cough, or shortness of breath through an electronic health declaration form. This system acts as an early warning to catch potential cases of infectious diseases.
What About Other Destinations?
Hong Kong, for instance, has taken additional steps, such as temperature checks and health assessments for passengers arriving from African transit hubs like Johannesburg and Addis Ababa. Healthcare providers are referring travellers with symptoms to hospitals for further evaluation.
If you’re planning to transit through any of these hubs, stay updated on health advisories!
How Can You Stay Safe?
While the risk is low, it’s never a bad idea to prioritise your health when travelling:
- Stay Informed: Check for updates from credible sources like the WHO or your local health ministry.
- Practice Good Hygiene: Wash your hands frequently, wear a mask if needed, and avoid close contact with people showing symptoms of illness.
- Monitor Your Health: If you feel unwell during or after your travels, seek medical advice promptly.
Singapore’s Commitment to Safety
The Ministry of Health (MOH) has reassured the public that it will continue to monitor the situation closely. Response measures will be adjusted based on the latest public health risks, ensuring Singapore remains a safe destination to travel to and from.
So, while the headlines might sound intimidating, there’s no need to let fear dictate your travel plans. With strong measures in place and a bit of vigilance, you can focus on enjoying your journey.
