Two years ago, my friends and I embarked on a road trip through New South Wales, Australia, eventually landing in Sydney. Naturally, we checked off the city’s iconic tourist hotspots: the Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge, and Luna Park.

But then, one of my friends suggested something different – A day spent trekking along the coastline of Sydney’s eastern suburbs, exploring the city’s legendary beaches. Looking back, that suggestion was pure genius. While this is totally subjective, that coastal walk ended up being my favourite experience in Sydney. In fact, it left such an impression that I’ve returned to do the trail several times during my subsequent visits!
It’s safe to say that the Coogee to Bondi Coastal Walk is an essential Sydney experience, offering breathtaking views, pristine beaches, and a sense of connection to Australia’s iconic coastline. Stretching 6 kilometres, this picturesque trail is a delightful mix of seaside serenity and vibrant beach culture. Whether you’re in Sydney for a holiday or simply exploring as a local, this walk is an absolute must.
This guide breaks the Coogee to Bondi walk into its key highlights, so you can make the most of each location along the way. So what are you waiting for? Pop on some comfortable trainers, grab your sunnies, and let’s set off!

Coogee Beach
Your journey begins at Coogee Beach, a lively yet laid-back spot where locals gather for a morning swim or a coffee by the sea. The beach’s calm waters make it ideal for swimming, so take the opportunity to dip your toes in or even go for a proper paddle. The gentle waves and family-friendly atmosphere mean it’s perfect for all ages.
Before setting off on the walk, you might want to enjoy breakfast at one of Coogee’s fantastic cafes. I’d definitely recommend popular haunts such as the Gusto Espresso Bar, which are known for their fresh, wholesome fare. I mean, let’s be real, nothing beats a good flat white to kickstart the day!
Over at the north end of Coogee Beach is the Bali Memorial, a reflective space dedicated to those lost in the 2002 Bali bombings. It’s a poignant reminder of the resilience of communities and a peaceful spot to pause before you continue your journey.
Gordon’s Bay
A short walk north of Coogee lies Gordon’s Bay, a secluded cove with a rugged, untamed charm. Though it lacks the sandy expanse of Coogee, it’s a lovely spot to stop and take in the views of Sydney’s wild coastline.
This small bay is bordered by rocky cliffs and dotted with boats moored offshore. Sit for a moment on the wooden decking that hugs the shoreline, enjoying the tranquillity before the more bustling sections of the trail.
Clovelly Beach
Next along the trail is Clovelly Beach, a distinctive spot that feels more like a swimming pool than a traditional beach. With concrete platforms on either side and shallow waters, it’s a favourite among families and those looking for a calm, relaxing swim.
The gentle lapping waves and small, protected cove make Clovelly perfect for a leisurely paddle. However, do practice caution as occasional swells, driven by prevailing wind conditions and changing weather, can make the waters unexpectedly choppy!
For those who fancy a quick bite, Sea Salt Clovelly is a small cafe nearby serving refreshing drinks and snacks. Once you’re re-energised, the trail begins to climb, unveiling some of the most dramatic coastal views of the walk.
Sandstone Cliffs Over Clovelly
Between Clovelly Beach and Waverley Cemetery, the trail takes you along a stretch of Sydney’s iconic sandstone cliffs. While not as vast as the Twelve Apostles along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, these cliffs offer a similarly stunning view that will take your breath away.
Honestly, this is my favourite spot in all of Sydney! The views from the designated platforms are stunning, with the endless blue of the Pacific stretching out before you. Also, it’s an Instagram goldmine – Every angle feels like it belongs on a postcard (I mean, look at the pictures!). On windy days, you can feel the energy as waves crash against the cliffs, their roar echoing along the coast.
Just a heads-up, though – Stick to the path and don’t get too close to the edge as the sandstone can be quite slippery and unstable. It’s a good reminder of just how wild and untamed this part of Sydney’s coastline really is. Safety should always be your priority!
Waverley Cemetery
Though it may seem unusual to find a cemetery along a coastal walk, Waverley Cemetery is an unforgettable highlight that blends history, art, and nature in a truly unique way. Established in 1877, this historic site is renowned for its elaborate gravestones and mausoleums, many of which are stunning works of art in their own right.
Perched dramatically on a clifftop, the cemetery offers sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, creating a peaceful and almost otherworldly contrast with its tranquil setting. As you stroll through, the sight of the ocean stretching endlessly beyond the gravestones adds an ethereal quality to the experience.
For history enthusiasts, Waverley Cemetery is also the final resting place of some notable Australians, including Henry Lawson, one of the nation’s most celebrated poets. His gravesite, like many others here, is a place of reflection and remembrance, offering a deeper connection to Australia’s past.
Bronte Beach
Descending from Waverley Cemetery, you’ll arrive at Bronte Beach, a favourite among locals – And for good reason! With golden sands, excellent surf, and a grassy park perfect for picnics, it offers stunning views of the beach and ocean. Whether you’re soaking up the sun, catching waves, or enjoying the relaxed atmosphere, Bronte Beach embodies the best of Sydney’s beach culture.
One of Bronte’s standout features is the Bronte Baths, a stunning ocean pool carved into the rock at the southern end of the beach. This is arguably one of Sydney’s finest swimming spots, with crystal-clear waters and views of the waves crashing dramatically against the rocks. Whether you’re a strong swimmer or just fancy a dip, the Bronte Baths provide an invigorating experience!
For refreshments, there’s no shortage of options nearby. Cafes like The Bogey Hole Cafe offer delicious meals and coffee, perfect for refuelling before continuing the walk.
Tamarama Beach
A short walk from Bronte, you’ll find Tamarama Beach, affectionately nicknamed “Glamarama” by locals due to the supposed abundance of glamorous (if you know, you know) sunbathers enjoying the sun on one of the smallest, yet most beautiful, strips of sand on the trail. This compact yet gorgeous beach is surrounded by sandstone cliffs and lush greenery, giving it a resort-like feel.
While the waves here can be rough, Tamarama’s beauty makes it a popular spot for getting your daily dose of vitamin D and photography. If you’re visiting in spring (Oct–Nov), Tamarama plays host to the annual Sculpture by the Sea exhibition, where the coastal path is adorned with spectacular works of art to populate your Instagram feed!
Bondi Icebergs Swimming Club
Before you reach Bondi Beach itself, you’ll pass the famous Bondi Icebergs Swimming Club. Chances are, you’ve seen this iconic view on countless Pinterest boards or Instagram feeds! Bondi Icebergs is a quintessentially Sydnese institution and an absolute must-visit for anyone exploring the city.
For a small entry fee, you can enjoy a swim in the pool, where the waves frequently crash over the edge, adding to the thrill. Even if you don’t fancy a swim, the club’s dining room and bar offer unbeatable views of the coastline, making it a great spot for a coffee or meal.
Bondi Beach
Your journey concludes at Bondi Beach, a beach that needs no introduction. This expansive beach is the epitome of Sydney’s beach culture, buzzing with surfers, swimmers, and sunbathers from all walks of life. With its white sands stretching endlessly along the coast and the vibrant atmosphere, Bondi is a lively hub where locals and visitors alike come to enjoy the sun, surf, and social scene.
Take a leisurely stroll along the promenade, where you’ll find the Bondi Graffiti Wall, an ever-changing display of colourful street art. The murals range from whimsical and light-hearted to deeply thought-provoking, offering a glimpse into Sydney’s creative spirit.
If you’re feeling peckish, Bondi offers a plethora of dining options. Grab a casual fish and chips meal (I highly recommend the local favourite, Bondi Road Seafoods!) to enjoy on the sand, or indulge in something more refined at one of the beachside restaurants. For a sweet treat, don’t miss Gelato Messina, which is arguably the best gelato in Sydney!
