Set in the serene countryside, this living museum brings to life the customs and heritage of five major Bornean tribes: the Kadazandusun, Bajau, Murut, Rungus, and Lundayeh.

As you glide along the calm rivers, you’ll have the chance to spot diverse wildlife, including proboscis monkeys, various bird species, and perhaps even crocodiles in their natural habitat!

A true icon of Kuching, the Kuching Waterfront is an ideal spot for family getaways in Sarawak’s capital. This scenic promenade offers a relaxing setting for quality time together, with opportunities to stroll, soak in the views, and snap family photos against the backdrop of the magnificent New Sarawak State Legislative Assembly Building by the Sarawak River. Families can also enjoy a walk across the 335-meter-long Darul Hana Bridge, which provides a perfect vantage point for admiring the building up close while enjoying panoramic views of the river and the sunset.

Kids will love the vibrant ambience as night falls when the Assembly Building is illuminated in a dazzling array of colours that reflect beautifully on the water. To complete your experience, indulge in tasty street snacks from nearby stalls as you explore this vibrant and scenic spot!

7. Say hey to orangutans at Semenggoh Nature Reserve

Animal enthusiasts, this one’s for you! Semenggoh Nature Reserve is a must-visit for families, and having been there myself, it was undoubtedly one of the highlights of my trip. This incredible sanctuary is home to semi-wild orangutans, offering families a rare opportunity to observe these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.

During our visit, we were lucky enough to spot four orangutans, including a heartwarming close encounter with two of them — an unforgettable experience that kids and adults alike will treasure. Best of all, it’s budget-friendly! Tickets are just RM5 (~S$1.50) for Malaysian adults and RM10 (~S$3) for foreigners, making it an affordable and enriching family adventure.

8. Watch cultural shows at Sarawak Cultural Village

Sarawak Cultural Village is a must-visit destination for families, featuring 11 traditional houses that represent the state’s rich cultural diversity. From the Bidayuh Longhouse to the Melanau Tall House, each offers a glimpse into the unique lifestyles of Sarawak’s native communities, with tribe members showcasing traditional crafts, cooking, and weaving.

Adding to the experience, the village hosts two vibrant cultural performances daily. These shows bring Sarawak’s traditions to life through captivating music, dance, and storytelling, offering an engaging way for families to connect with the region’s extraordinary heritage!

9. Hunt for delicious local food at Siniawan Old Town

Nothing beats the feeling of savouring delicious local food together with your family when travelling, and Siniawan Old Town Night Market in Bau is the perfect spot for a memorable dining experience. This quaint old town, adorned with glowing red lanterns and charming murals, offers a nostalgic atmosphere that families will love. The market features a variety of stalls selling local dishes and street snacks. You’ll even get unique treats like pitcher plant rice, fried quail, and pork satay — flavours rarely found in other cities in Malaysia!

10. Admire the view at Tasik Biru

Did you know there’s a beautiful blue lake just outside Kuching? Located in Bau, Tasik Biru is a hidden natural gem perfect for a family outing. At Tasik Biru, families can enjoy a relaxing boat ride while soaking in the tranquil surroundings. For an adventurous twist, you can cross an inflatable bridge (with a small entrance fee) that leads to a nearby Chinese temple, adding a cultural element to your visit.
