On 20 Jan, amidst the vibrant atmosphere of Shifen Old Street in New Taipei City’s Pingxi district, a bustling hub known for its charming sky lantern shops, a tourist’s quest for the perfect photo ended in distress. According to local media reports, the Filipino woman, in her 30s, decided to strike a pose right in front of an oncoming train.

Surveillance footage from a nearby store captured the alarming moment. As she stretched her arms out for the shot, a train barrelled towards her. The train collided with her arm and sent her sprawling to the ground. The impact resulted in a deep cut to her face and multiple injuries to her head, chest, and pelvis.

Immediate Aftermath and Medical Attention

The New Taipei City Fire Department reported that the tourist sustained a laceration measuring between 3cm to 5cm on her head. She was promptly taken to Keelung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, where she remained conscious but required surgery to address her injuries. The Manila Economic Cultural Office in Taiwan confirmed on 21 Jan that she is in stable condition.

While her injuries are the immediate concern, the incident also highlights important legal implications. Taiwanese police emphasised that the railway area is strictly off-limits to the public. Trespassing on railway property is a serious offence, and the tourist may now face hefty fines. If found guilty of compromising railway safety, the fines range from NT$50,000 to NT$100,000 (approximately S$2,070 to S$4,140). Should her actions result in severe injuries, the fines could escalate to between NT$100,000 and NT$300,000.

A Cautionary Tale for Travellers

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety and awareness while travelling. While the allure of capturing that perfect photo can be strong, it’s crucial to respect local regulations and prioritise personal safety. Railways and other restricted areas are off-limits for a reason, and venturing into these spaces can have serious, life-altering consequences.

Whether you’re exploring bustling streets or serene landscapes, always be mindful of your surroundings and adhere to local guidelines. Your safety is the most important souvenir you can bring back from your travels.
