Where is this phone-free island?
Ulko-Tammio is one of the 41 national parks in Finland. It is also known as the Jewel of the Eastern Gulf of Finland. Situated off the coast of Hamina, the island is also largely uninhabited. Home to rare bird and plant species, a bird-watching tower, rugged cliffs, and well-marked hiking trails, the island is a perfect destination for travellers who wish to disconnect from the internet world for a while.
Aside from the serene lush nature and the spectacular view from the bird-watching tower, visitors can also find a cave which was a shelter during World War II, as well as two cannons that showcase the island’s military history. A cabin and a camping area for overnight stays maintained by Parks & Wildlife Finland are available for tourists who wish to have a unique phone-free travel experience here.
Mats Selin, an expert in island tourism at Visit Kotka-Hamina, said in a news release that the initiative is to urge holidaymakers to switch off their smart devices. By doing this, visitors can genuinely enjoy the islands, as reported by CNN. No phone, no social media, no work emails; take the opportunity to relax comfortably with nature, wildlife, and the people.
Is going phone-free compulsory?
Taking part in digital detox on the island is highly encouraged. It showcases benefits like relieving symptoms of anxiety and depression through engaging with the surroundings and people face-to-face. Yet, even so, participation is not compulsory for tourists, and a functioning mobile network fully covers Ulko-Tammio.
“We encourage visitors to put their phones away voluntarily and to focus their senses on nature rather than on their phones. This is a great initiative that could be implemented in other natural and recreational destinations, too,” stated Joel Heino, the Manager, Outdoor Recreation and Visitor Management at Parks & Wildlife Finland, in a news release.
