If your family’s looking for a new show to binge-watch on Christmas Eve, Gong Yoo is here for you. Netflix recently announced that his new K-drama The Silent Sea will be released on 24 Dec 2021. Not a bad date to be reunited with one of our favourite oppas, right?
The Silent Sea is set in the year 2075. In this sci-fi series, the Earth is depleted from all its natural resources and an elite team of researchers is sent on a special mission to the moon to investigate an abandoned research base. As the team seeks to answer the question as to what happened in the mysterious base, each member finds his and herself wrapped up in new predicaments and unforeseen events in outer space. Their fates will hang by a thread, and viewers won’t be able to stop watching.

The people behind The Silent Sea
According to the Netflix press release, The Silent Sea is based on “director Choi Hang-yong’s short film by the same name, which received much acclaim at the 13th Mise-en-scène Short Film Festival in 2014.” Renowned Korean scriptwriter Park Eun-kyo is also part of this authentically Korean sci-fi series. He received Best Screenplay awards at the Korean Association of Film Critics Awards for Mother and at the Blue Dragon Awards for Crush And Blush.
Aside from the utterly dashing Gong Yoo, The Silent Sea boasts of a stellar cast that includes Bae Doona and Lee Joon. The official Netflix poster, in fact, shows Bae Doona who plays Song Jian, an astrobiologist who has just set foot on the moon. The star-studded cast is expected to deliver a grand finale to a successful year of Netflix K-dramas.
