Japan was hit by a heatwave yesterday, with temperatures soaring to record-breaking 39.5C in Hokkaido. Previously, the northern Japanese island’s record was 37.8C. The sizzling temperatures resulted in nearly 600 suffering from heatstroke, and one death.

While temperatures in Tokyo were a balmy 32C, it was still much higher than the historical May average of 26C. Other regions in Japan weren’t that lucky though – it was 35.8C in Hatoyama in Saitama Prefecture, 35.7C in Date, Fukushima Prefecture and 35.4C in Kiryu, Gunma Prefecture.
The hot weather is expected to continue into Monday, 27 May 2019.
