As previously reported, Malaysians and Singaporeans crossing the border via the bus halls may use the QR-code immigration clearance starting from 16 Dec. However, Johor’s investment, trade, and consumer affairs committee chairman Lee Ting Han confirmed the QR code clearance will soon be expanded to all passport holders, including foreign nationals, by mid-2025. This broader implementation reflects Malaysia’s commitment to addressing the daily congestion at one of the busiest land crossings in the world.

With approximately 300,000 to 350,000 people crossing the Johor-Singapore border daily, congestion and long queues have been persistent issues. The Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (SEZ) initiative, aimed at fostering stronger economic collaboration between the two nations, has further amplified the need for efficient border management..

A Technological Leap Forward

During pilot trials conducted between June and Nov 2024, Malaysian citizens travelling by bus and motorcycle were able to use QR codes for immigration clearance at Johor’s land checkpoints. The trials, which relied on three separate apps – MyRentas, MyTrip, and MyBorderPass – saw significant support and no major technical glitches.

Starting in early 2025, the QR code system will be fully implemented for Malaysians, followed by an expansion to all passport holders by mid-year.
