This town on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt seems like it has been recently struck by a strong typhoon or earthquake. Decrepit structures, trash-cluttered homes and piles of garbage in every corner – this is a normal scene in Manshiyat Naser, the Garbage City of Egypt.

Manshiyat Naser is a slum settlement where the Zabaleen (garbage collectors) sort recyclable items they gathered from Cairo. Like any other towns, Manshiyat Naser has streets, shops and apartments but the living conditions may be harsh for many people – no electricity, continuous supply of water and proper drainage. Despite the difficult living environment, the economy has survived and many people earn enough to support their basic needs.

While Manshiyat Naser is not very appealing to many, some intrepid travellers consider it an off-the-beaten-path attraction that must be explored in Egypt.
