In a devastating incident near one of Mumbai’s most popular tourist attractions, at least 14 people have tragically lost their lives following a collision between a passenger ferry and a navy speedboat on 18 Dec. The crash occurred as the ferry Neelkamal was en route to the Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site situated on an island off the coast of Mumbai, India, which draws both locals and international visitors.
The incident has shocked the city, as it occurred in a well-known area frequented by tourists. The Elephanta Caves, famous for their ancient rock-cut temples and sculptures, are just a short ferry ride away from Mumbai’s bustling shores. However, on that fateful day, the water became the scene of a tragic disaster.
The Collision and Immediate Response
According to Devendra Fadnavis, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, the collision threw dozens of passengers into the sea. The Indian Coast Guard captured video footage of a large-scale rescue operation shortly after the incident. Rescue teams deployed multiple emergency vessels to work together and pull survivors from the water.
By 19 Dec, emergency responders had successfully rescued 98 people, including two injured individuals. Sadly, the crash claimed the lives of 14 individuals, including 11 civilians and 3 navy personnel.
Ongoing Investigation and Updates
Preliminary reports suggest the navy speedboat’s engine may have failed, contributing to the collision. The authorities are looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident, and a full investigation is underway. Meanwhile, the local community and authorities are working together to ensure that no other passengers are unaccounted for.
As rescue teams search for more passengers, we extend our thoughts to the victims and their families during this heartbreaking time. The Elephanta Caves, a testament to India’s rich cultural history, will undoubtedly continue to welcome visitors. However, this tragic accident will not be forgotten.
