The cost of student visas will see a substantial rise from NZD 375 to NZD 750. The fee hike is intended to cover the rising costs of processing student visa applications. Despite the increase, New Zealand remains a competitive study and work destination compared to Australia and the UK.

The fees for post-study work visas will also increase significantly, more than doubling from NZD 699.34 to NZD 1,670. Tourist visas will also become more expensive, rising from NZD 211 to NZD 341.

Impact on other visa categories

The fee increases also affect other visa categories. Skilled Resident Visas will see a significant jump from NZD 4,290 to NZD 6,450. Family Category Visas will rise from NZD 2,750 to NZD 5,360, and Parent Retirement Category Visas will increase substantially from NZD 5,260 to NZD 12,850.

The visa fee increases are expected to save taxpayers over NZD 563 million in government funding over the next four years. This shift in financial responsibility from taxpayers to visa applicants aligns with New Zealand’s overall fiscal strategy.

Many Singaporeans, whether to make a transition into a new job, take a break from their studies or escape the rat race in Singapore for a bit, see Australia and New Zealand as top destinations for their work-holiday options. Moreover, it seems to be an increasing trend among young Singaporeans as the age limit for work-holiday visa applications has increased from 18-30 to 18-31 in recent years.

Despite the recent fee increases, New Zealand remains a popular destination for international students. In 2023, the country saw a significant rise in student applications, with 69,000 more applicants compared to the previous year. The majority of these students were from China, accounting for 35% of all international enrollments. India followed with 17%, while Japan, South Korea, and Thailand contributed 10%, 5%, and 4% respectively.

How New Zealand’s visa fees compare globally

Australia has recently doubled its student visa fees to AUD 1,600. Despite the increase in New Zealand’s student visa fees, they are still significantly lower, making New Zealand a more affordable choice for international students seeking to study abroad.

As New Zealand prepares to implement these changes, prospective visa applicants should plan accordingly to accommodate the higher costs. Despite the increased fees, New Zealand remains a highly sought-after destination for work, study, and leisure, offering a compelling combination of quality of life and educational opportunities.
