This new move in public health initiatives will prohibit smoking in all areas across the city. While certain areas in Osaka have already implement smoking restrictions in 2007, this new ordinance further expands the smoke-free zones to encompass the entire city.

To accommodate smokers, the city plans to establish at least 140 designated smoking areas by the time the ban takes effect. This includes 120 new smoking spaces and 20 renovated ones. What’s more, the city will provide subsidies and encourage private businesses to create smoking areas on their premises as well.

Healthier city and cleaner air for the upcoming World Expo

The implementation of Osaka’s citywide smoking ban is particularly significant as the city is gearing up to host the world expo in Apr 2025. The theme of the World Expo, “Designing Future Society of Our Lives,” aligns perfectly with the city’s recent commitment to promoting healthier lifestyles for its citizens and extending lifespans. By implementing this citywide smoking ban, Osaka is taking action on its dedication to creating a healthier environment for both residents and tourists.

Strict enforcement and penalties

To make sure everyone complies to this new ordinance, the city will impose a fine of 1,000 yen (~S8.66) on individuals who violate the smoking ban. This strict enforcement measure aims to prevent smoking in public areas and maintain a clean and smoke-free environment for everyone.
