You can find many lakes that are crystal clear but no other lake can ever match New Zealand’s Blue Lake. Also known as Rotomairewhenua, the lake currently holds the title as the clearest lake in the world. Scientific tests by New Zealand’s National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) showed Blue Lake to be the clearest natural body of fresh water known to man. The lake is so clear, you can actually see through the water up to 80 metres deep. The water is considered almost as “optically clear” as distilled water.

In early 2013, Danish photo-journalist and environmentalist Klaus Thymann was granted special permission by Māori, NIWA and New Zealand’s Department of Conservation to capture the clarity of the lake for conservation purposes.

Here are some of the stunning shots he took.

Part of the Nelson Lakes National Park, Blue Lake is a popular camping, hiking and fishing destination. However, visitors are not allowed to take a bath, wash clothes or dishes into the waters to maintain the clarity and natural beauty of Blue Lake.
