The first image that comes to mind when anyone thinks about “Antartica” is commonly a freezing cold place dominated by icebergs and penguins. However, there is an incredible island that may change your perception about this isolated icy continent.
The ring-shaped Deception Island, located in the South Shetland Islands archipelago off the Antarctic Peninsula, is home to one of the safest harbours of the continent. The centre of the island is a large caldera of an active volcano which also functions as a natural refuge from storms and icebergs.

Once used as whaling station, Deception Island is now a popular tourist attraction because of its natural hot springs – a perfect opportunity to wear your bikinis and swimsuits in the middle of freezing Antarctica.
If you’re planning a trip to Antarctica, add this island to your list of must-visit attractions.
