Attention all chess enthusiasts! Here’s a destination you need to visit in your lifetime. Well, even for those who are not fond of this famous board game, it’s still worth a visit.
Situated east of Elista, Kalmykia, in Russia, Chess City is a huge complex dedicated to chess and chess competitions. It was completed in 1998 when Kalmykia’s chess fanatic President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov wanted to create a chess complex in time for the 33rd Chess Olympiad.

The complex features a conference centre, public swimming pool, museum of Kalmyk Buddhist art, sculptures and artwork dedicated to chess. One eye-catching art installation is the giant chessboard in the town square where you can really play chess.
