Thailand’s Pling Island temporarily closes due to reef health
Recent scorching temperatures across Thailand and Asia have caused a rise in seawater temperatures. Unfortunately, this rise in temperature has a negative impact on coral reefs, a phenomenon known as coral bleaching. The coral, stressed by the warmer water, expels the algae living within them, which turns the coral white and hinders their growth.
Thailand is a leader in coral reef conservation, and they made a decisive action to protect these vital ecosystems. In response to the coral bleaching threat, the Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation (DNP) has announced a temporary closure of Pling Island and the surrounding reefs within Sirinart National Park.
The DNP isn’t just focusing on Pling Island. They’re also closely monitoring other national parks, including Koh Chang, Koh Samet, and several islands, for signs of coral bleaching. This proactive approach ensures the health of coral reefs throughout Thailand.
