Croatia has many amazing places to visit, but Dubrovnik and the Adriatic coast are among the most famous. However, for those who love nature, Plitvice Lakes National Park is a must-see. It is the largest national park in Croatia and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Since Croatia joined the Schengen Zone in 2023, travel to the country has become even easier, and Plitvice remains one of its top attractions in 2025.

Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Lakes is beautiful in every season. In spring, melting snow makes the waterfalls strong. In summer, the lakes shine in bright shades of turquoise, surrounded by green forests. Autumn covers the park in red and orange leaves, while winter turns it into a peaceful, snowy wonderland.

The park is well organised and set up, with a range of walking trails and interesting boardwalks, all intertwined within a rich verdant stage of trees, lakes and waterfalls. In particular, the boardwalks are all built such that one would be immersed in the park’s impressive collection of lakes and waterfalls. The walking trails are all marked, and maps are placed at various points within the park. One could easily spend a whole day on the trails. There is also a short ferry ride on one of its lakes, all included in a ticket to the park.

Visiting Plitvice Lakes in early spring means fewer leaves on the trees, but the lakes still shine in a mesmerizing turquoise-green colour. In summer, the park becomes even more stunning, with lush greenery surrounding the waterfalls. Autumn brings golden and red leaves, while winter turns the park into a snowy wonderland. No matter the season, Plitvice is a breathtaking place to visit.

The park has two main entrances, with a few hotels located near Entrance 2. Travellers driving to Plitvice will find plenty of homestays and guesthouses in nearby villages. For those taking the bus and looking for affordable stays, the village of Rastovača—just 800 meters from Entrance 1—is a great option, as many local families rent out rooms.

Getting to Plitvice Lakes is easy. Buses from Zagreb take about 2.5 hours, while those from Split take around 6 hours. Since the park is located between Zagreb and the Adriatic coast, it fits perfectly into any Croatia travel itinerary.
