Japan is Opening a Luxury Campsite Inspired by Princess Mononoke

A themed campsite that has all the hallmarks of the Emishi Village featured in the fantasy film is in the making.

There’s something inexplicably special about watching a movie released by Studio Ghibli. The unconventional techniques brought into play and careful attention to details as the stories unfold have the uncanny ability to transport viewers from their seats and into the scene. And, that marks our love affair with the iconic Japanese animation film studio. Many of us set our hearts to uncover real-life locations that inspire the setting of the well-loved films. Now, you can finally live out your childhood dreams of Princess Mononoke. A themed campsite that has all the hallmarks of the Emishi Village featured in the fantasy film is in the making.

Dubbed Hygge Circles Ugakei, it will be nestled deep in the green woods of the Mie Prefecture in Uga Valley, surrounded by refreshing mountain streams and sublime waterfalls. It boasts breathtaking views at every step of the way including stunning vistas of the glistening Pacific Ocean. With ample hiking trails, guests can seek to expand their horizons.

The Princess Mononoke-inspired campground is the brainchild of Danish company Nordisk. It will open its doors in 2021.

At Hygge Circles Ugakei, the ultimate glamping experience awaits you. Tents, cottages and cabins that look like something out of a Studio Ghibli anime will dot the sprawling area. Additionally, it will have all the luxuries you deserve in the heart of nature.

Sustainable tourism

While the beautiful aesthetic of the Princess Mononoke campsite takes the cake, its initiatives undertaken to espouse environmental sustainability adds on to the allure. Nordisk seamlessly integrates that vision into its concept of hygge, a Danish term for a lifestyle of comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of well-being.

Fans would have noticed the recurring theme of sustainability in many of Studio Ghibli films including Princess Mononoke. The message of environmental protection is still very much relevant two decades later. And, that powerful idea will permeate at the new campsite.

According to Erik J. Møller, CEO and Owner of Nordisk Company in Denmark, “Hygge Circles Ugakei will be divided into 3 zones: an accommodation area with huts and established glamping tents, an area by the river, where you can pitch your own tent and a learning area, where activities and events take place”. Degradable and upcycled materials will put the structures together.

We like how travellers will be able to envision a greener future where humanity and nature strike a balance by visiting this otherworldly scene.
