Favourite entertainment spots such as Universal Studios Japan, Tokyo Disneyland and Ghibli Museum have all suspended operations. Sanrio Puroland, also known as Hello Kitty Land, is no exception. The theme park announced that it will be temporarily closed from 22 February until 10 May 2020 in a statement released.

The announcement of temporary closure was accompanied by a video with a touching message, “Even though we’re closed…we’re here for you.” The video also featured a compilation of behind-the-scenes of the empty park. Costume characters, ride technicians, and janitors, among others, were featured with empty halls, deserted ride queues and eateries.
The sombre video pulls on the heartstrings of long-time fans. The theme park dedicated to Hello Kitty and the world of Sanrio characters undeniably has a special place in the hearts of many. The announcement that Sanrio Puroland will be closed has definitely left Sanrio fans devastated. Long-time fans expressed their fondness of Sanrio characters and melancholy over park closure on the internet.
Although Sanrio Puroland will be closed until the situation improves, staff and fans alike are anticipating its reopening. For guests concerned about purchased tickets, Sanrio Entertainment Co. Ltd. has assured its assistance with reimbursements in the statement released. Guests who have purchased tickets with travel agencies should contact vendors directly for assistance with refunds.
