While flying over Myanmar, the flight hit a patch of extreme turbulence, causing the cabin to jolt violently. Passengers described a sudden rise followed by a dramatic drop, throwing those not buckled in against the ceiling and overhead compartments.

The pilot, reacting swiftly to the situation, declared a medical emergency and diverted the aircraft to Bangkok. Unfortunately, a 73-year-old British man passed away during the incident, likely from a heart attack triggered by the turbulence. Approximately 30 passengers and crew members also sustained injuries, some requiring hospitalisation.
