Attention all book-lovers, the annual Singapore Writers Festival is back for another extravaganza of literature and the arts!
Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Singapore Writers Festival 2017 is one of the most anticipated literary events of the region. Each year, the festival features an amazing line-up of writers and speakers from all around the world, hosting discussions, seminar lectures, workshops, and even performances. It showcases both written and spoken word in the four official languages of Singapore, and culminates in the audience-favourite Closing Debate as its finale.
This year, the festival’s theme is “Aram”, a Tamil word which means “goodness” or “doing good”, an idea that’s going to be explored during the painstakingly-curated programme throughout the week-long event.

Past editions of the Singapore Writers Festival boasted over hundreds of authors and speakers, including internationally-acclaimed science fiction fantasy writer Neil Gaiman, celebrated poet Carol Ann Duffy, as well as a plethora of writers and stakeholders from the local literary scene. Although the full line-up for this year has yet to be revealed, it has been announced that the likes of best-selling American fiction author Eliot Schrefer, and Ken Liu – who is currently writing an official novel for the Star Wars franchise – will be gracing the festival.
Singapore Writers Festival 2017 has selected Ireland as its country of focus. This means we can expect top talents and works from the North Atlantic nation in Europe. In fact, the country is home to some of literary history’s most prolific giants like modernist writer James Joyce, unabashed playwright and poet Oscar Wilde, and Christian apologist C.S. Lewis. With a number of award-winning Irish storyist invited to speak at sessions, we’ll be sure to see the rugged countryside and enchanting architecture of the Irish culture weaved into the festival.
