The cable car, which runs from Stechelberg to Mürren, has a dizzying 159.4% gradient. This officially makes it the steepest cable car in the world!
The cable car marks the first completed section of the Schilthornbahn 20XX project, an ambitious initiative aimed at revolutionising alpine travel. Once fully operational, the system will reduce travel time from Stechelberg to Schilthorn Peak to just 22 minutes, compared to the current 32 minutes.
For now, the Stechelberg–Mürren route offers a taste of what’s to come. Over the next two years, additional sections will open progressively, starting with the track connecting Birg to Schilthorn Peak in Mar 2025. By 2026, the entire network will be up and running, promising smoother, faster, and more exciting journeys through the Alps.
