Countries like Japan, Thailand, and South Korea have introduced their own visa schemes to attract digital nomads all around the world. Taiwan’s digital nomad visa scheme is aimed at complementing these offerings. For instance, remote workers can now move to Taiwan after completing their non-extendable six-month stay under Japan’s digital nomad visa program.

Current visa options and future plans

Currently, remote workers in Taiwan rely on visa-free entry or a standard tourist visa, which limits their stay to three months. The new digital nomad visa will come into effect after approval from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, allowing remote workers to extend their stay for a significant period.

Aside from enhancing its visa schemes, Taiwan is facilitating a smoother process for other talented and well-to-do employees to acquire permanent residency in the country, further enhancing its appeal as a destination for global talent.

Comparing regional digital nomad schemes

  • Thailand: The ‘Destination Thailand Visa’ allows remote workers to stay for 180 days, with an option to extend for another 180 days at an additional cost.
  • Japan: Japan’s digital nomad visa permits a stay of up to 180 days for citizens of 49 countries and territories, including EU member states.
  • South Korea: South Korea’s unique Workation Visa allows employees to stay for up to one year, by which they have the option of extending their stay for an additional year.
