In 2016, Singapore raked in almost 9.5 million overseas trips and the figure doesn’t seem to be slowing down one bit. The travel industry is simply booming and Singaporeans are constantly in search of new travel destinations and the accompanying flight deals. While Bangkok, Bali and Tokyo are ever-so-popular, there is a growing number of Singaporeans who are keen on venturing to slightly less touristy places.
But where exactly are they going?
According to data collated by the APAC Travel Dashboard recently updated by Google, these are seven of the up-and-coming destinations most Googled by fellow Singaporeans:
- Luang Prabang, Laos
- Hanoi, Vietnam
- Lisbon, Portugal
- Munich, Germany
- Da Nang, Vietnam
- Prague, Czech Republic
- Yogyakarta, Indonesia
Be it the fascinating cultural practices, historical monuments or the flourishing culinary scene, there is something in each of these cities that have piqued the interest of Singaporeans. Let’s take a closer look at the list.
Four out of the seven cities – Luang Prabang, Hanoi, Da Nang and Yogyakarta – belong in Asia. Two of these rising destinations are in Vietnam, slowly creeping up the tourist radar for a slice of the spotlight. Da Nang, in particular, is an intriguing place to visit. Once a former French colonial port, modern-day Da Nang boasts contemporary architecture and lavish five-pearl resorts by the beachfront. This coastal city is also the gateway to numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as the Imperial City of Hue, the Old Town of Hoi An and the Hindu temple ruins of My Son.
The three remaining on the list are European cities: Lisbon, Munich and Prague. Lesser-known among them is Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. Travellers in this culturally vibrant city will most likely land their feet on the iconic Portuguese Pavement, which are unique decorative mosaic designs laid out on sidewalks, parks and squares. Beyond what’s on the ground, Lisbon is an affordable holiday destination where travellers can feast on the finest custard tarts and sip on beer or Port wine without feeling the pinch on their wallet.
As travel trends constantly evolve, we believe that other interesting destinations would soon be added to the mix. In the meantime, if you haven’t already, go on and dive deeper into this list first-hand – be it catching the sunset at Luang Prabang’s Mount Phousi or admiring the breathtaking skyline from the Prague Castle.
