Typhoon Shanshan is heading towards the Amami Islands and is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to Japan. The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued warnings for heavy rainfall in many parts of the country, with particularly intense rain expected in Miyazaki Prefecture

Flight cancellations and land travel disruptions

Typhoon Shanshan’s approach has caused significant travel disruptions in Japan. Japan Airlines (JAL) has cancelled several domestic and international flights due to the storm. Domestic flights to and from the Nansei Islands, including Amami and Okinawa, have been affected. Additionally, some international flights to and from Osaka and Nagoya have been cancelled.

Rail services are also expected to be heavily impacted. The Central Japan Railway Company has announced the potential suspension of the Tokaido Shinkansen bullet train service from 29–31 Aug. Furthermore, there is a possibility of cancellations for some or all services on the line on 28–29 Aug. Other bullet train lines, such as the Sanyo Shinkansen, which serves Hiroshima, and the Kyushu Shinkansen, may also experience disruptions.

What travellers should know when going to Japan

Local authorities have advised travellers to make preparations in anticipation of the effects of Typhoon Shanshan to minimise its impact on their travel plans. Some of these include checking hazard maps to avoid staying in areas that are prone to flooding and landslide risks. Also, they should stay abreast of important information on the evacuation routes in case of emergency.

There is still a lot of uncertainty regarding the extent of damage which Typhoon Shanshan will cause. However, Typhoon Shanshan is expected to bring about extreme weather events that could disrupt the livelihood of people in affected regions.

As such, local residents and tourists should stay updated on weather forecasts and heed any evacuation orders or safety advisories issued by local authorities.

Travellers should check with airlines and rail operators for the latest information on cancellations and schedule changes to avoid any unexpected disruptions to their travel itineraries.
